I also I believe Seagate bought Samsung HDD.

Hitachi and WD contracted with each other last year so that these drives should be based on WD equipment and tech.

From my research :
"As far as drives, I would recommend getting Toshiba DT01ACA200's (~$100-115), 2TB drives. SATA III, CCTL (same as TLER), 64MB Cache, 7200RPM....where as the WD Red's have "Intellipower" and are really around an average of 5900 RPM (and cost a few dollars more). The Toshiba DT01ACA200 is literally a relabeled Hitachi 7K3000 (which it says Hitachi on the label), and I would take a Hitachi Deskstar over any consumer grade WD or Seagate, so I expect the same for the Toshibas (which my first Toshiba DT01ACA300 -- 3TB drive, is on it's way).

These drives are 7200rpm and designed to work in raid arrays! I buy them and enjoy the awesome speed.

Now I wish I didn't have two reds. I would have gone with only these!

No, this is a 3.5" drive (the physical size of the drive). Laptops take 2.5" drives.

Plain and simple. According to feedback on Newegg the drives are simply not packaged properly for shipping. These are delicate devices that, when roughed up (think UPS) the chances that they will arrive un-compromised are a crapshoot. Given that I won't take the chance.

You probably need a 2.5. Some laptops that ar very slim and are not using ssd use a 1.8 profile.
Just a heads up the faster the speed of a drive the higher the fail rate. For a backup drive you might prefer a slower drive while a system drive is better when it is faster.

I ordered a pair of oem reds. They came in just plastic anti static bags. The box had construction paper packing holding them in place. Both worked perfectly.

I have never seen a reference correlating spin rate and failure rate. Can you please link that. I'm interested in seeing it.

The drives in this price range are usually green 5400rpm. This is a 7200rpm raid class drive!

Then you were lucky. NewEgg used to package well about three years ago but they are a crap shoot right now. Not one of the last three HDD's I've picked up from them over the last two years has been packed right. All moved in the shipping box when it got to me.....sometimes with only one large bubble put on top and nothing on the bottom or sides.

Bought my last couple from B&H and they packed those right. Amazon was pretty good also but had a bit of movement.
