Just wonder how did you get NR609 for $240?
It's $349 * 0.8 = $279.2, even with $10 off for new customer, it's still $269.2.

Well, I have to come here and change my tune. I have had the TX-NR609 (which is also the receiver in the HT-S7409) for just over 15 months (3 months past the warranty). Two nights ago, I watched a couple of hours or Netflix streamed through my Blu Ray player which is routed to my TV through this receiver (as I usually do almost every night of the week). Last night, instead of using the Blu Ray player, I hooked in my laptop through a different input because I wanted to watch a movie I had ripped on my external HD. But the weird thing was that no matter what I did, I wasn't getting the picture from the laptop onto the TV. This was strange because I've done this many times before with no problem. I restarted my computer, I changed around video settings.......nothing. While plugged into the receiver, in my video settings on the laptop I could see my Panasonic TV listed as a display -- but every time I tried to send the picture to it, I just got two black screens (the TV and laptop). Finally, I gave up and figured we'd just stream some Netflix from the BD player like usual. That's when I got the "ut-oh" moment. No video from the BD player either. That's when I realized that it was the receiver. It was late and my better half was falling asleep, so I just bypassed it and ran an HDMI directly from the laptop to the TV and used the TV speakers. Tonight,. I sat here for an hour playing with everything possible. I tried switching out every HDMI cable and using different inputs on the 609. No picture on anything. If I play a CD in the BD player, I get sound through the speakers, so the receiver is getting the signal from the BD player -- but it won't send any video to the TV. Dammit. That's essentially the HDMI problem that everyone has with Onkyo receivers. I'm pissed. I only paid $235 for it last November.....and I bought two and sold one on CL for $300 which lowered my investment further.....but I'm still pissed. Three months out of the warranty and it's looking like I have a useless receiver. I'm further pissed because I hadn't even scratched the surface on using all of the functionality yet. I had planned to have this receiver for several years. It had the features I wanted. Now it seems like I've got a brick and a need to pick a new receiver from someone else. That stinks.
Maybe all of the naysayers are right. I hate to admit that since I'd had such success with this receiver.....and I'm still sitting here feeling awfully burned. I'm going to look into whether or not I can fix it......but I'm guessing that for what it'll cost me to fix, I might as well buy a new receiver..... |

From a post @ Onkyo - "At least for no picture on HDMI out (and TX-NR609), pull power plug and wait 10 seconds before doing an factory reset." Last edited by Roveldude; 02-21-2013 at 07:55 PM.. |

Re the authorized CA return center, If you're talking about Adams Electronics, they are good people. I have quite the lemon SR-608 whose original 2 year warranty is about to end. Luckily I bought with Amex and get the third year. That receiver had maybe all of 3 or 4 months total usage since it's in a vacation home and in July it blew the amp. Big flash and poof, dead. Onkyo did pay to ship it to Adams. After a month's wait for parts, I got it back and the next time I went to the place, it lasted all of a day and poof, another flash and it was dead again. Then my Christmas present was getting it back and having no IR, a display that was blank for the first 5 minutes, then crazy characters all over from then on, so back it went. After getting it back a few weeks ago, this time it finally looks to be working. Adams was great and paid the shipping both ways on the two re-sends too. Can't say much for their quality though. Pretty lame that this thing died 3 times. It does run hot like others have said. You could probably fry an egg on the case. By contrast I have had three Denon 2311's during this same timeframe and they have all been solid. I'm done with Onkyo; just too much drama. |

I got the HT-S8409 refurb before Xmas for a family gift for sub $350 on a similar 20% off deal. It also came with the TX-NR609. While i was gravely disappointed at the diminutive size compared to past Onkyo and Integra units, it has performed flawlessly in our 7.1 living room with 3D Blu-Rays and HDMI. There is no auxiliary switched outlet on the back, which i would have used for a Panamax surge unit I've had for 15+ years, but beyond that, it rocks. The nettune features alone, and the Android app for remote control have given me a new toy to play with until i can afford a 50lb behemoth again. Oh and lets not forget it all came in mint condition with every accessory. The speakers are rocking my kids game room with an old Onkyo 6.1 receiver. Even the powered sub was nicer than I expected for a HTIB. Unless you are some kind of audio snob you can't go wrong with this unit. NOT plagued by the 616 etc issues. I think if you avoid any x1x units, you are ok.
P.S. the included speakers were all in wood (albeit mdf) cabinets with a plastic cap on top to look fancy. The L/R fronts are tall and have a decent heavy metal base to keep them upright. I have not critically listened to them, but I can say in a small room, paired with our xbox 360, Halo rocks, and the kids play Battlefield something or other and it sounds very nice. sounds are localized well even with just 5.1 in that room (6.1 receiver and no room for rears anyway) Last edited by howiez; 02-22-2013 at 10:55 AM.. |
