It looks like this printer was $50 not too long ago. I guess I have to wait to match that deal. Since I am convinced I cannot do without color printing, this seems to be the best overall printer.

I actually ordered some meritline ink just a bit ago. That's cool, I trust it well enough to use it. BUT, I may have found the better answer I've been looking for. First let me say I have absolutely no relationship to this company or stand to gain anything, just sharing what I found. I found them on Amazon then when and checked out the web site directly. The company is printpayless. They sell bottles of ink which they claim is specifically formulated For Brother which I assume means the additives such as glycerol and some cleaning fluids to keep the print head clear. The bottles can be used to directly fill the OEM cartridges, no syringe needed. But better yet they sell these clear pre-filled cartridges with easily accessible holes pre-drilled with plugs. They also sell other cool stuff like Continuous Ink Supply Systems but Not sure I really need that, have to think about it. Anyway, why I didn't find these guys before I don't know but I've very hopeful this will work out well for me so just passing along FYI for what it's worth.

I do know others have had good luck with generics; just conveying my experience. |

I have been using generic inks going back the the old Epson 880, which was a fabulous printer and never had a problem.
I now use a CIS (continuous ink system) off an Amazon selelr for my Slickdeal Artisan 835 and still working great, hundreds of sheets later. The whole CIS cost the same as the OEM ink cartridges, and will last 10 times as long. |

I used the generic ink for the j435w since it was on sale last summer and I've had no problems so far. Also, I used to work at a place that refilled ink for people I've only had one person out of hundreds complain that the generic ink ruined their printer. That person also claimed that the cartridge exploded in his printer. Upon inspection cartridge was still full and it turned out that, that persons particular printer model pooled ink at the bottom and from the printer reviews online he wasn't the first one that it exploded on I forget which model it was but it was a really old canon printer and i'm sure you can google exploding ink canon to find it.But otherwise, visually inspect the cartridge. there should be no reason it should break inside your printer. |

This printer sounds good. I end up doing so much research, it takes me forever to decide! My iMac is getting fixed by our friendly geniuses - it's almost 5 years old, ancient in computer age, but cheaper than buying a new one. The next thing that goes wrong and it's history. Probably can get a few bucks on CL for parts. Argh, just had the HD replace a few months ago. Around the same time my Honda EX Coupe stopped on the fwy - another $400. My fault for not getting the recommended servicing at 60,000. It's a 1998 and only has 67000 miles on it. Trying to talk Mr. Cheapskate into getting a new car, but nooooo! The kids around here offer to buy it all the time, it's in such good shape. Sigh, always something! Thanks again!

Your life reminds me of mine except that I'm to poor to afford to fix all the things that keep falling apart so I've become a DIY guy. |

"There are no product specification differences between these three models. The only difference is the design pattern on the top of the lid of the machine." Best Buy has a long history of carrying products with slight physical design alterations (color, bezel shape etc) so they can give it a different model number and avoid price-matching. |
