I have never tried that. I've always used the whole reward coupon when ordering online.

From Staples Rewards FAQ [staplesrewardscenter.com]:
Rewards must be redeemed in full if being used for an online or phone order; for in-store purchases only, a one-time-only coupon with the expiration date of the original Reward will be printed for any remaining balance of $1.00 or more and must be used in full in one subsequent purchase.

Then you sell that future purchase and get you cash back. some times more cash than you started with.

Or use it on something it is FAR and get a check for you money back.

I agree it isn't exactly free, but all of us cheap ass SD'ers love to play the game and do the work.

Yes you do if you want $20 in rewards back. If not, with $5 coupon you are paying $20 plus sales tax for 5 reams of paper.
