Just got the D3100 deal. Am going to Alaska and Hawaii this year and wanted my first DSLR for it. Guessing I should get a 150,200,300 mm lens, any recommendations?

Depending on how you want to approach the trip -- I did mine this past Sept with D90 plus UWA, short-zoom, and super tele-zoom. I used the super tele-zoom the most at Denali & Kenai NP for wildlife & landscape, and some UWAs in-between for landscape. Not too much short-zoom, other than portrait here or there.

It's all about portability and your willingness to carry gears.

I bought Lowepro Fastpack 250 Backpack few years back. I am very happy with this. It holds my laptop, D7000, 3 lens & Flash, still have place for few other small staff. I use it mainly for travel and day trips(local photo shooting)

I have a Lowepro Exchange Messenger for light kits and a Flipside 400 AW when I want to carry everything. I also have a couple Think Tank digital holsters and a Think Tank belt setup. The Messenger was on sale for 23 bucks on Amazon a while back when I was looking for a lighter kit setup. The Flipside I got from AvidMaxx Outfitters/SellNSend via their ebay store. Generally they have the cheapest prices on Lowpro gear new and from an authorized seller. The think tank stuff I got all of used as it's all pretty pricey new and doesn't hold it's value that well as it's pretty specialized "pro" type gear other than their bags, but those are still pricey. Top quality and super intelligent design, you definitely get what you pay for, but I'm cheap and poor, lol.

I would recommend superzoom 18-200
it is not very fast, but it is very good for general use.
there is newer lens that zooms up to 300, but it is much bigger and heavier.

It debatable if this is a good lens or not. I have mine for a few years (original VR version) and like it a lot. It may not give you the best picture quality, but it's a great walk around lens with plenty of range to play with, and solid build quality.
