Some information:
18-200mm, 18-300mm, 28-300mm, all 3 of these lens will work on DX A(D5XXX, D3XXX, D7XXX, D300S). On FX (D4, D800/E, D700, D600, D3S) only 28-300mm will work. IMO, 18-300mm is a tick sharper than 18-200mm on DX. 18-200mm weight 20 oz, 18-300 weight 29 Oz. My travel/vacation camera bag (ThinkThank Retrospective 20) will have 16-35mm F/4 VR, 28-70mm F2.8, 70-200MM F2.8 VR II and usually small sb600 flash and 50mm F1.4. The bag itself will accomodate D800 with L bracket attached to the 70-200mm with hood reserved. This is my weight limit, I used to have 14-24mm F2.8, but its very limited focal range make it see very limited use. For afternoon walkaround, Lowepro Passport with 28-70mm. If I know I will go to somehwere where lighting is an issue, 50mm F1.4 is my choice. My beloved 28-70 f2.8 has accompany me from D80, D90, D700 and now D800. Its fatter, heavier than the new 24-70mm. I did tried renting the 24-70mm, the 4mm wider is not enough to convince me to get the newer model. The 28-70mm/24-70mm are definitely sharper then the 24-120mm F/4 where the focus can hunt in the dim light. The only disadvantage (or advantage?) is the weight which is 2 pounds! On the other hand the weight balance with d700/d800 is very good, and the weight might help reduce that mirror slap micro shake. I'm thinking to get the 35mm f1.4 or the 85mm f1.4 for portrait, but I know it will see very limited use. Hm... |

has the 18-200mm VR been replaced with a newer model in the past couple of years or did they just up the price? When i bought a D90 a few years back, I seem to recall it being in the mid $600 range (with the sigma equivalent being in the low $300s).
