I think you are missing the point at least why the software was created. Without a S.M.A.R.T. monitoring program built into Windows (or whatever OS you use) how else are you going to know if your drive starts having to relocate sectors and begins a slide downhill? What if the bearing starts the failing process and spin up times start to go off the chart? As I said on page 1 according to google only about ~45% of mechanical hard drives in their servers reported SMART useable in determining a failure before hand.

...But running without a SMART scanner makes no sense at all. It's something you start and let sit in your try (I tweak settings up) so at the first sign of something happening, or temperatures being askew I know about it. Without it you are blind until something significant happens in many cases when the drive no longer boots or functions at that point data maybe gone forever.
