Not a bad price but the retina models are $1400+ which is a better investment imo
but you almost could buy two of these for 1 retina drool I'd jump on this but i have the last of the 17" books and wouldn't give it up anytime soon for a retina 15"

Screen resolution is a dealbreaker. Just bought a MBA 13 at $1066 the MbA has 1440x900 resolution, better than the MBP.

But if you really need a MBP, this is a good price.

BTW MBA is much faster than the MBP in everyday operations.

But some people light some weight to their notebook

Can we please have a few more people chime in and try to talk people out of buying a Mac Laptop and get them to buy a Windows based Desktop? They are completely interchangeable and everyone that has an Apple Laptop can obviously replace it with a Windows Desktop instead. Sheesh.

Don't you mean a Windows based laptop?

A W530 might be good or a 8770w.

Some of us like to upgrade our laptops so a W530 is better than a MacBook Pro in that regard. Also having 1920 x 1080 on a 15.6" screen is much nicer than 1280 x 800 on a 13.3" screen.

SSDs make a big difference.

But OSX is pretty much locked to Apple hardware ( Hackintosh is another thing).
Yes, point being?

You don't seem to grasp people's preference for OSX and mac products. A lot of programmers I know love programming on OSX because of unix, and the consistency it offers not really found in linux machines. OSX is only limited to people who don't know how to use it.

Yeah if trading a better display and more cash for less ports, less RAM, less options for harddrive upgrades, and no optical drive is a priority.
This MB Pro + 256GB SSD (~$180) and 8GB ($50) upgrade makes the price difference between the retina a lot less. Essentially it comes down to rather or not you need/want the retina display.

Save the $1400 and build a crazy desktop or buy a gaming laptop, then use the leftovers for a Mac mini or build a hackintosh.. Best of both worlds Wink

Even the most powerful Macbooks are bested by a moderate desktop or high end laptop, and you are really only buying it for OSX (and portability of course)..

I never understood why people spend so much on a powerful Mac when a PC equivalent is much cheaper. I suppose if you need to use an OSX specific app that is hungry for CPU power, but whatever that app is doing could probably be done on the PC too no??
This isn't even a high-end Macbook Pro. It's bottom of the barrel. Only a Dual core CPU, and no discrete GPU (stuck with Anemic Intel graphics) It's essentially a $1000 Macbook with a misleading name. A $400 HTPC with an AMD APU would be faster than this.

8gb of ram is low by today's standards,
No it's not. Vast majority of people will never utilize even close to 8gb of memory.

You get an excellent screen, but for me as a programmer, I'm tending to favor this over the rMBP.
Why? As a programmer, you need pixel real estate and retina display gives you better flexibility.

Imagine 2 years from now. 8GB retina with 128GB of HD space vs (potentially) 32GB of ram, 2 Hard drives (replace optiical drive with caddy) one for Storage, both much larger than 128GB, as the price continues to drop on storage.
2 years from now, 8GB or RAM and 128GB will still be more than adequate for most people.

27" @ 2560 x 1440 or 13.3" @ 2560 x 1600. I wonder which looks nicer to the eyes...
27" when you have a choice

13" screen is hard on the eyes because it is so small.

27" is also viewed from farther away than a laptop screen so resolution comparison isn't apples to apples.

Retina is a better buy.

This model doesn't offer anything special.

The 1280 x 800 resolution reminds me of the first Fujitsu tablet that I bought.

Your talking about PC land......don't under estimate the hardware Apple uses. Not similar to what a PC manufacturer would use at that price point. That 13" screen is sharp enough and the hardware is upgradable unlike the Retina models.

I would say 4GB is minimum still. 8GB would be my recommended and you should be good till next upgrade.

This, having that resolution on that small of a screen kills your eyes. Get a 27/30" monitor and go to town imo

Here's a thought. None of you designed anything in Apple or Windows. Crap on yourself instead. Nothing is perfect for all applications. Pointless to argue. Mac is good. Windows shits all the time, but can be good.
