Seagate 4TB USB 3.0 External Hard Drive: $160

I've taken apart the 3TB version, so the 4TB should be just as easy. It's a single drive.

Based on feedback in the Costco thread regarding the drive (if you buy it in store) if it has a sticker that says "Windows 7/Mac OSX" then it likely has a 7200 rpm Barracuda XT drive in the enclosure, however if it says "Windows 8/Mac OSX" it is likely a 5900 rpm version "green" version. I picked one up and:

• don't like the enclosure "case" - as others have mentioned no breathing room and my 7200 drive hit over 60C in it
• don't like the dock as when my system booted with the drive connected it wasn't recognized... had to power cycle the dock for it to show up in windows7. Also if I left the drive connected in this state it would run and get hot even with no data transferring
• this seems to be a dock problem since I have another usb3 external drive that this doesn't happen on (500gb Toshiba Canvio).

Anyways, after doing a few transfer tests and making sure the drive worked ok, I pulled it out and placed it in my htpc/gaming pc... After putting it in my htpc, it runs nice and cool ~40C even during large transfers.

Wow! Excellent info in your post. It almost seems that this drive would work better as an internal drive rather than an external, and that is exactly what I needed to know.

I already have more than enough external drives and I also have some enclosures that have power fans and keep the installed exterior HD cool as a cucumber.

I thought Seagate stopped making "green" 3.5" drives. I would think whatever is inside is either an enterprise drive marked down or a regular 7200 RPM Barracuda that isn't being sold as an internal drive yet.

just got the drive sorry for basic question but for mac osx out of box says it works with both windows and mac but if your only going to use with mac should this be reformatted to something else? Thanks for the help. Comes loaded with almost a 1gig of videos and software preloaded.

My STCA4000100 arrived Tuesday. IS IT 7200 RPM? Box mentions Windows 8, which someone said mean NOT 7200. Sticker on enclosure mentions DX which does mean 7200.

Here is the info from sticker on the black ventilated enclosure:

I called Seagate. First told they do not know!. Then one guy said his manager looked up in some 'special database' and said it is 7200, and that all newer STCA4000100 have 7200 rpm. So that contradicts what I have seen written that newer units have 5900 or 5400 rpm? I evenr had the Seagate agent email me 7200 rpm in writing, but do not have any confidence without actually opening the enclosure, lookin at disk, and testing.

If true, this would CONTRADICT the statement that "boxes referencing Windows 8 is NOT 7200 rpm". Can anyone confirm whether PN: 1DXAP4-500 4TB, Model SRD0SD0 is 7200?
Will Seagate downloadable software, or any other software confirm, 7200? I don't want to crack the enclosure just to test, in case I want to return it.

In today's world you would think spending over a $100 on a product entitles you to a material specification like rpm. It should be stamped right on the enclosure's label !!

I purchased this drive from the recent newegg deal for $161 w/FS. I received it today and noticed the Windows 8 logo on the box. Upon cracking it open, I was delighted to find the Barracuda XT ST4000DX000 7200RPM drive.

Interesting the bare drive seems like it got the full 3 year warranty my guess is the bare drives were manufactured and date of build started 3 year warranty, and they hung around until they were put into enclosures at which point the warranty for the enclosure was set to 2 years+ 2-3 months. Anyhow, I haven't turned it on yet but I'm planning on leaving the front cover off as pictured. Hope this helps confirm that even the Windows 8 logos have the XT's in some - (maybe all) of them.
