However, I'm still puzzled as to why tool manufacturers continue to combine metric with SAE sizes. How many cars still use SAE sizes? There can't be many. Yet they force you to buy useless tools.

Nobody is forcing you to buy anything... you always have the choice to NOT buy it. They also sell kits that are metric or SAE only... this just happens to be a kit that has both.
