Pretty good set, either to start out or just to carry around.

Sucks that it's still just 50% off with the coupon codes, always better when it's on sale for 50% off and then the coupon codes give you even more of a discount.

Worth the price either way.

Yeah really, but at least the $10 back in points helps the deal quite a bit if someone is planning on buying more from them.

Sears has got to be the most poorly run business I have ever dealt with. This is ridiculous.

So I had mentioned earlier that I purchased the 118 piece tool set last week and wanted to upgrade to this one.

I placed my order at 6:15 PM and didn't get a e-mail until 8:05. This is not because the store was busy, it is because the order didn't reach the store until 8:00 PM. They can't do anything with the order until it comes through.

So I tell them that I want to return the 118 piece and pick up the 154 that I just ordered. They tell me that since I paid with PAYPAL that they can only offer me store credit. The system wouldn't let them offer any type of refund otherwise.

So I call Sears.Com and they say that in order for me to get a refund, I will have to mail the item (on my own dollar) back to the corresponding factory. They did offer to reimburse me the shipping fees, but that is ridiculous. I'm already at the store with the item.

So I ask the cashier, can you give me the gift card and just sell me the 154 off the shelf for $74.99? Take the one that I ordered online and pretend that never happened. He said no, the item cannot be canceled at the store. So I was like what if I don't pick it up for a month? He said then we will keep calling you to pick it up, it never gets canceled. He also said that he can't modify the price of the item to $74.99 because I used coupons on it.

So after much thought, I decided that since I refuse to mail it back, that the only way for me to get this done is to refund it for store credit. I then come home and wait on the phone for 10-15 mins for the operator to come on and cancel my order. She finally does.

I then go back online to purchase the tool set with the gift card, and now they aren't letting me use the EARN10 promotion. Presumably because it is gonna take 24-48 hours for them to cancel my order and I had already used it once.

Lesson: Sears will never survive if this is their policy. I mean, you're going to reimburse me shipping fees on a pretty heavy tool box rather than me just return it to the store.

If you are purchasing from sears, DO NOT USE PAYPAL. Otherwise, you won't be able to get a refund if you end up returning something.

Now I have to wait until my order gets canceled because I want that $10 SYWR credit that I already had. I just hope that my order gets canceled before Thursday on top of having to drive back to the store to get the item. I wanted to get this done today because it's a holiday and there was no traffic.

/end rant

I was going to try one for you, but I just realized mine have expired. I kinda' have my doubts it would though. If I recall correctly, the last time I tried stacking a coupon like that on top of codes I got locked out of applying any coupons. YMMV of course, I'd give it a try if I had one.
24 hours after signing up for the craftsman club, I still hadn't received my coupon yet. So I signed up again with a different e-mail address, this time through the sears.com link.

I never received a coupon at either e-mail address.

I was reading another thread from way back and someone mentioned that Craftsman Club coupon didn't stack with a different promotion, so I figured it was a waste of time anyways.

I've had a different experience. Sears stores have accepted returns for refund to my Paypal account without any problems. But if I wanted to exchange for another size or whatnot, the only option was return and re-buy.

But I do agree with you - Paypal is more of a hassle than it's worth with Sears.

hold out for a 300+-piece set that goes on sale--otherwise you'll kick just create work for yourself. Pain in the butt selling/shipping this one out when I upgraded.

… a FULL 82pc socket set for $42. yeah that's right...i went back to the store and found the 26pc metric wrench combo set Made in USA! they had 2 left...the rest were all Made In China
yeah i spent an extra $12 but i got all of the wrench sizes i could need for a lifetime and every socket size in 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 in both 6pt and 12pt.
Craftsman makes over 300 different sockets. So an 82 piece set is not going to include every socket size in 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 in both 6pt and 12pt.

And while I agree about the filler items in the regular sets, the filler items do provide a set of hex bits - the Allen wrenches and a set of torx and screwdrivers - the bit set and driver.
And while regular screwdrivers and hex/torx sockets are better tools, they are much more expensive and according to your post, you have not accounted for either.

I own this set and it is good...just one drawback...the case...when you open it...the tools often fall out of place....its a drag.
Lol...I did this several times and it is a bitch to put all the sockets/etc back in place. Finally I wrote "This Side Up" on the top in thick black marker...hasn't happened since. I got this for 49.99 about 2yrs ago but it's a nice set even for 74.99. I'll admit the hex pieces are kinda a waste as I rather have more larger sockets instead. It's still a handy set/case though....

ok maybe i exaggerated when i said "every" - how about most sizes of what 90% of us would need in a lifetime? you could make the argument about these mechanics sets and that may be the case...but where these 82pc kits shine is where they not only overlap with the mechanics set offerings but they go above and beyond and provide 6pt and 12pt variations. there have been times when i needed that 6pt socket and the 12pt would have done more damage to the bolt - actually multiple times all of which involved my jeep

i didn't account for hex keys and the screw driver bits b/c with the 26 pc wrench sets you get 18 more wrench sizes. to buy 18 more wrenches in metric and another 18 in standard will be MUCH more than buying a set of metric and standard hex keys ($10 max) and then an identical Craftsman socket + driver bit set w/ handle ($13.49)

^THAT. i ran into a similar issue

good luck trying to return something in a Sears store when it was purchased online using PayPal. you will get a song and dance and it will require a manager to come over and manually push it through. it ends up being more hassle than it's worth

I've had this set for probably 10 years or so. The problem isn't when you open the case as there's already a big picture on the up side, it's when you pick it up (yes, while it's closed). The sockets fall out and are all over the place. I use thin pieces of foam to 'seal' the case better and keep the sockets from flopping around when I need to move it from one location to another. This is just a poorly designed case as other sets do not seem to have this problem.

What you need to understand is that Sears isn't a retailer anymore. It's being run by Wall Street, hedge fund, private equity types. They don't actually know about how to run a retailer. They don't know how to create value. All they know how to do is loot value from established companies. That's why they're called "Vulture Capitalists."

Sears is run by Eddie Lampert, who ran hedge funds for years and now is using Sears to line his own pockets. He doesn't actually need to do a good job of retailing to make money for himself. He just sells off Sears locations (Sears was unique in that it owned the land its stores were on. To "create value," Lampert borrowed heavily against that land. Long term, this kills the company. But short term...Merry Christmas for Eddie!), cuts operations to the bone by hiring minimum wage workers and failing to invest in stores, and by....selling off quality brands like Craftsman to Communist China.

Sears is a poster child for how Wall Street types have ruined America.

I just googled it and apparently Sears did paypal refunds in the past, and they weren't showing up for weeks to months after repeated tries. This was on expensive items too like refrigerators that were $1100.

Like I said, I returned stuff I bought with paypal to advance and not I could see the credit almost the same day. Sears has issues.

Wal Mart should just put them out of their misery and buy them and K-Mart. Pretty soon people are gonna have to mail in for their craftsman replacements.
