DEAD/OOS

Was walking though Target yesterday and noticed the Westinghouse 50" LED 1080p 60Hz TV [target.com] was on limited clearance for $299.99 (reg $599.99 previous sales for $499.99)

Talked to the guy at the tech department and while there were none out front he said there were a few in the back and the deal was live (Sawmill Rd/Dublin OH location)

Might be worth checking out to see if other stores had the same offer

..reading through a bunch of these posts

I wonder how much quality people were expecting for $299

First off...its a Westinghouse which has some very questionable reviews...as a brand
Then its a large TV....which means that every detail( or defect) is very noticeable

I think for 399-429 you could have a 50" 720P plasma that would be head and shoulders above this TV

I went ahead and picked one of these up. But whenever I tap lightly on the screen, the whole thing or area lights up bright..
LOL

RETURN IT!!!

is something that you are going to probably use for a few years merit a "little" more money?

IMO..if this is the budget you have for a TV you would be better off buying a used one that is 2-3 years old from CL

I purchased it, but it will be going back, unfortunately. I wanted to like it. But I simultaneously hooked up my current set with the new one to compare the colors, and while the picture on the Westinghouse IS phenomenal, the issue with the reds looking pinkish is not imagined, nor is it really forgivable. Especially when in direct contrast to my other set.

Had I not had them both side by side, would it have been as apparent to me? Probably not. But I did, so it was.

The other thing that I was disappointed with was the sound. It's extremely tinny.

Is it worth the $300 (actually $332 for me, since it was $349 at my target)? Absolutely. It's a great deal. But I don't NEED this set, and I'll just wait for something slightly higher quality. But I do think this is a great deal for those who need or are looking for a set.

I was on the fence about returning mine and then got around to downloading the AVS HDTV calibration disc (http://www.avsforum.com/t/948496/...alibration good guide on using it is the HDTV calibration video on the disc or http://lifehacker.com/5858625/how...es-or-less ) to work on the picture settings. As noted, there aren't any numerical values but these are the settings I found provided the best picture for my set. I also have the noise filter set to off and color temp normal. With these setting the picture is a lot better than stock and I think we'll hold on to it to use in our room. Hope this helps some of you out!

edit: I'm glad some people are reporting positive results using these settings! However I did want to add that while these worked for my set in my typical lighting conditions (lower light/night viewing) I would highly recommend downloading the disc from the link above and running through the basic calibration yourself. There seems to be a lot of variability with the screens and everyone's lighting conditions will vary making the contrast settings unique to each application. Good Luck!
Thanx, I did it and we are enjoying our tv in our bedroom!!

Has anyone had luck connecting a sound bar or surround sound to this television or am I just being stupid? I have checked all the inputs on the television and as far as I can see there are no audio outputs on the television itself short of the headset output (which you could use and split I guess). There is is miscellaneous red RCA/coaxial plug that is used as far as I can tell for nothing on the side panel as well.

It has audio out, it's the coaxial output (orange colored rim). Depending on your soundbar you may need a little converter like this one [amazon.com] . This is the converter I had to get since my soundbar had a TOSlink optical input instead of coaxial. Works perfect for sound. Color on this TV is another subject. shake head. You will need to turn the TV sound all the way down as the set has no option to "turn off" the speakers.

This or hopefully whatever source you're using (provided you aren't just hooking it directly up to a coax cable from the wall) has optical out and you can plug your soundbar directly into that. That's my plan once I get around to purchasing one Smilie

I tried to connect my Macbook pro using a Mini Display to HDMI adapter, but the TV doesn't recognize it. Keeps saying No signal. Did anyone run into this issue?

Naw, I have a 60 inch for my primary TV. This is just something I picked up to hook up an extra PS3 to for when my niece comes over.

It should work. You probably have to press the equivalent of a function key and F key to use dual display or change the output display on your Macbook.

Anyone tried to calibrate it using a DVD?

I don't know if this will help anyone or not, but for the pinkish issue I've noticed that the color settings always drop back to default on my set. This is annoying, but if I go back into menu and flip the settings back to my personal one then it corrects it. I also noticed you can't alter the tint setting which doesn't allow to enhance the richness of the colors. What I did was go to the Sports setting and drop down and customize it to take advantage of the highest tint setting available. My reds are red after doing this. Hope it helps. Great set for the price IMHO.
