We've had three Crane cool mist humidifiers. The first was this model. Lasted a whole three months. Then we got two more Crane branded cutesy humidifiers as baby shower gifts. One was a penguin, the other a dog. Those, too, lasted a whole three months.

Gave up on Crane and got a Vicks. Not "cute", but works and has worked for more than twice as long as the Crane models. And it's cheaper, too.

EDIT: But now that I think about it, the Vicks is probably a warm mist humidifier, if that makes a difference.

I just tried this but you have to pay $5 shipping and sales tax. Amazon has it with no tax for my state and free shipping.

I have another one of these right now, it works pretty good for the baby's room. This is the 2nd one we have, the first one we bought quit on us a few months into using it, and Crane warranty sent us a brand new one (this one) to replace it. It does seem pretty good though, so in for another!

Distilled Water!!!!

Wish they'd make an effective, easy to fill, whole room/house humidifier that didn't look horrible. We currently have a 5 gallon Bionaire, but it's plastic, can be loud, and it's a pain to fill. I don't want to use a central air system -- just a good, evaporative type. Here's what we have now...

Never have to worry about white dust with these. It was pretty expensive -- can't buy replacement seals for it anymore, so time to get a new one. They have a decent looking one on Bionaire right now for $69.99 (Free shipping) The filters are a bit pricey, but little maintenance here aside from that (we have very dry weather -- I've never seen mold build up in ours -- we use a tiny bit of bacteriostat solution once in a while just in case).

TIPS for this model from an owner... most can be found in the manual:

1. As mentioned, it is best to use distilled or filtered water, particularly if you get the white dust.
2. It generally works best on "medium" speeds. If you turn it up too high, the mist doesn't travel far enough into the room and falls too early. Only turn it up high enough so the mist travels up in to the air... if your mist is falling down, you have it turned up too high.
3. Clean it weekly with vinegar/water mix. It will prevent build-ups and bacteria.

This thing easily runs 16-20 hours without a refill on the optimal "medium" setting.

This is exactly right. If you just do what the directions say, you will not have any problems. I usually use distilled water mixed with regular tap to minimize white dust.

Crane Cool Mist Humidifier does nothing but wet the floor...

I've been very pleased with the amount of water this thing gets into the air - and rather surprised since the mist is so fine.

We have ours dialed in to where you can just see some mist and the floor nor dresser gets wet. If you set it on full blast expect a flood.
