Dell has the M4600 workstation barebones setup for just $660 which I think is a smoking hot deal for a workstation class FHD notebook.

Just add the FHD screen for $50. You should do other upgrades yourself.

Base specs:
Core i5-2520
1080p display (get the upgrade, you won't regret it)
ATi FirePro M5950 discrete graphics card (like a 6770)
9 cell battery
2 gb RAM
320 gb hard drive
Total = $660

I think this is my second SD thread ever so please be gentle! Thanks for looking.

15.6" Anti-Glare LED-backlit screen in case anyone is wondering.

OP, is that a Sandybridge CPU? Seems like a decent deal for a powerhouse (albeit not very portable).

a good deal. but cpu is kind of out of date...

Ivy bridge does not offer any significant performance improvements over Sandy Bridge. Primarily slightly better clocks and better power consumption.

If that is not a factor then this is really good deal. Get somewhere 8 or 16 GB of RAM and you are set with awesome workstation.

Wish it's the M6700 with the FirePro M6000 graphics card. The M6600 is old.

How did u get to the link?

Ivy Bridge does have better integrated graphics, though in this case it would be a moot point.

Nice deal on a great workstation, hard to beat their FHD, 3yr warranty, and battery life.

Is the webcam option available to anyone? It isn't showing in my configurator.

#11 you can build a much much much more powerful laptop for cheaper in general. Not sure why this is that slick.

Not sure what you're talking about since the cheapest 15" laptop with a 1920x1080 display is over $760...

I'm using an M4600 to type this post (bought refurbished about a year ago for $830). Observations/comments on ownership and this deal:

1080p screen upgrade definitely worth the price - it's a TN panel, but pretty good considering (saturates sRGB, contrast is decent, color shift/viewing angles are better than just about all the other TN panels I've seen, the "sweet spot" on this display is quite large). Edit - gets super bright if you need it, too - between the high max brightness and anti-glare the display is quite usable in bright environments.

You'll also want at least 4GB of RAM for Win 7, but save money and install it yourself for less - accessing the RAM slots in this laptop is pretty easy.

Another note - with a dual core cpu you can only use 2 slots for a max of 16GB (you need a quad core if you want to use all 4 slots for a max of 32GB).

The M5950 graphics chip is decent - plays dota 2/portal 2/skyrim @ 1080p on medium/high settings without much issue (for reference, mine is spec'ed as follows: i5-2520, 4GB RAM, M5950). So yeah, this 'top is a pretty decent option as a cheap gaming notebook assuming you upgrade RAM.

Ports - lots of ports makes this a nice choice for those using it as a desktop replacement - just about everything you could want (displayport, ethernet, hdmi, e-sata/usb 2.0 combo, firewire, 2x usb 3.0 + 2x usb 2.0, sd reader, etc).

Top tier wifi module - the intel 6300 is nearly as good as it gets - great wifi performance

This thing is built like a tank (also - heavy like a tank, too).

Battery life is just okay - I average a bit over 4 hours productivity (internet browsing, vpn for work) at reasonable brightness settings. Expect close to 2 hours max for heavy gaming. Note - the M5950 graphics do not dynamically switch to integrated - as far as I know there is no way to use the integrated graphics option (ie, for the purpose of better battery life).

Warranty - 3 years (even on my refurbished machine I got another 3 years)

Noise/heat - in regular use it is reasonably quiet, ie audible but not distracting, bottom gets warm, top stays pretty cool. The fans definitely spin up while gaming, bottom gets warmer but not really a big deal because if you are gaming you are probably not using it in your lap anyways.

Interesting question. That's another $260 off the deal price, so I doubt such a coupon exists, and if it did, I'm sure someone would have posted it by now. Smilie
