Dell has the M4600 workstation barebones setup for just $660 which I think is a smoking hot deal for a workstation class FHD notebook.

http://configure.us.dell.com/dell...3080460800

Just add the FHD screen for $50. You should do other upgrades yourself.

Base specs:
Core i5-2520
1080p display (get the upgrade, you won't regret it)
ATi FirePro M5950 discrete graphics card (like a 6770)
9 cell battery
2 gb RAM
320 gb hard drive
Total = $660

I think this is my second SD thread ever so please be gentle! Thanks for looking.

That has to the ugliest/bulkiest new laptop I have seen in quite some time lol. GPU is not half though. Higher end Class 2 on notebookcheck. Of course by next year it will be low class 4 lol. I would like to see more RAM tho but its cheap. Of course this has 1080p and a decent gpu. This is just a weird build imo. Is there a reason a business laptop would need a class 2 dedicated gpu? I cant imagine a gamer would want this. Confused.

not for gamers, for professionals or hobbiest that require gpu intensive software. video editing, 3d work etc

If only the cpu was a generation higher!

xoticpc.com you can build a much much much more powerful laptop for cheaper in general. Not sure why this is that slick.
This is a mobile workstation with a workstation GPU. If you don't know exactly why you need it --odds are you don't.

Had the same laptop with 1366x768 screen which was horrendous. Had an issue with LED lines, fought dell for 6 months for a repair, they ignored me, but Amex came through and in the end I returned the laptop for full refund.

I would discourage anyone thinking about getting this for gaming. That was 50% of my usage, but workstation graphics drivers caused some odd problems with games sometimes, especially anything AA or AF. Otherwise the laptop looks good and is sturdy, for business use.
You can't be serious.

An LCD replacement is had by saying "the LCD has lines on it. An external monitor does not. The issue happens in the bios"

They may also have you run the BIST. That's done by holding the letter D while turning the system on. This starts the test. For the LCD.

The only people that have issues with Dell workstation support, which I worked at in Tampa, are raging idiots that have no clue what they're doing with a computer and refuse to either troubleshoot it offer a rational explanation of how they came to their diagnosis

Whoever buys this laptop is a newb..

That only reason why this laptop is good is if you wanted a semi-gaming laptop about 1.5 years ago..

This doesn't even get to that level. I mean.. 3rd gen intel graphics should give this "video card" a run for it's money. This laptop should be around $470-500 (retail) at clearance/closeout (only because of the screen).. you WILL have to upgrade ram, and yes, no computer should be without an SSD. If you don't have an SSD, you have an old computer. I'd rather have Phenom II with SSD than 3570k without.
it's not a gaming laptop.

If you are thinking about commenting about how good of a deal this is, and have no idea what a FirePro or Quadro video card is, then stay away Smilie

Having an SSD or not has nothing to do with how well a computer works for most people. & you can have an old or new computer with or without one.

Do agree it's a overpriced by a couple hundred.

For the price though, a casual gamer might think this is golden. Sure you will probably have to dial back the resolution when you play crysis 3 on low, but you could still use 1080p for all other daily laptop business. It doesnt look like a gaming laptop so your boss wont know the diff. The battery should be pretty good on this. The price is actually great considering you COULD game on this. I rarely see laptops with class 1 or 2 gpu's for under heck 700-800 and those are usually not 1080p. Lenovo has had a few deals lately but the quality of those Y500s leaves alot to be desired (am currently trying to get one shipped to me that does not arrive damaged due to Lenovo's cheap packaging).

disclaimer, i have no idea if this would play crysis 3 even on low lol, probably not well

Really a shame it's not the IPS screen. And that weight. Would be tough to lug back and forth to work.

Is there a docking station specifically made for this laptop?
The Dell E-port docking station is the same for all series of E6X00, E6X10, E6X20, E6x30 and all Precision laptops. They do have the E-Port dock that says it's for the Precision series but the only difference is it has the huge 210 Watt power supply. I user the dock that came with my Latitude E6400 but use the power supply from Precision M6500 and it works great.

I would be embarrassed lugging around a laptop so massive and having to explain to people that it is not 10 years old. Dell needs a new department dedicated to form factor alone.

Again, you do not understand what type of laptop this is. Dell has many thin/light laptops. Looks at the XPS13 ad XPS15. This is a mobile workstation, a true desktop replacement, with ISV certifications for people who need them. If you don't then you don't need this.
