A lot of people don't like the 120Hz effect. For most things I don't, but it doesn't mean it's a gimmick, it's an interpolation technique that varies in implementation from TV brand to brand & within those brands from line to line. Looking at certain videos in 120Hz gives me a sense like I'm in a dream mode, my brain really objects to this, it can feel fake like the characters are floating almost 3D like. But it's all dependent on multiple factors; the content/material and how it was shot etc., and how well the TV handles the material. But that wasn't the point that person I think was trying to make, and that is that these along with several other LG lines this year are listed as being 120Hz Tru-motion when they are in fact LOCKED @ 60Hz maximum refresh rate on the panels and instead they are attempting to implement a process they call black frame insertion. However given the budget nature of the LED arrays these and the other TVs are not able to even correctly implement a true black frame. http://hdguru.com/lg-55lm6700-hdt...ated/8281/ For those dealing with the Active vs Passive debate this is an interesting read: http://www.displaymate.com/3D_TV_ShootOut_1.htm http://www.lgnewsroom.com/newsroo...ents/61296 Of course there are those like Joe Kane and one other who uses non-scientific methods to conclude it can't be 1080P but interesting. I find the LG Passive 3D to be better to watch. Last edited by Bdubslawman; 02-20-2013 at 04:09 AM.. |

Oh come on, judder? First off the person would need to own a Blu ray player capable of outputing 24p content. Secondly, beyond Blu ray there is no other source video that 120hz set will correct. Broadcast and gaming both do 60hz signals which judder would still exist regardless of the TV. Beyond judder issues, the human eye can't see much difference at rates above 60 hz anyways, but feel free to Google. It's all over the web. In regards to my TVs, the only difference I could ever tell between my 32" 7 year old Samsung LCD and my high end 50" Panasonic Plasma and 61" Samsung DLP was black levels and solarization. It had a horrible contrast ratio (a hall mark of it's age) but no, I could never tell a difference in sports nor could I tell a difference in resolution (720p vs 1080p) unless I sat closer than 7-8 feet. I just replaced it with a 43" Samsung Plasma and the black levels are noticeably better and solarization is improved, but still not absent. EDIT: Also add ghosting, another hall mark of it's age, but that has to do with the LCD response time, not the refresh rate of the TV. In regards to this set, you are correct, it is not a true 120hz set. My point was don't let that deter you from buying it. It's a fantastic set at a great price. dood, this is shameful to be frontpage on slickdeals...... just shameful for the 55" im not sure about the 47" but the 55" your better bet is to just buy it from costco for $699, and save yourself $150 for a soundbar 55LM4600 @ costco, bestbuy etc is the same model as the 55LM4700 minus the sound bar do the research, then come thank me for telling you to save $150 by not buying a stupid sound bar. |

But then you went on to say it's a "gimmick", by that logic 3D is a gimmick, adjustable back lighting is a "gimmick", those are subjective thoughts & opinions that was my point. It's a feature of televisions that TRULY offer it and this one CLAIMS to offer it and it does not. When a company lies/deceives it's customers that is never a good thing. Debating how useful 120Hz is or isn't depends as I said on the person, on the TV set (maker, line) and the content. Blu-ray players that are 24P are common so that's a non issue. My first TV was an LCD monitor (hd capable) - truly amazing for panoramic nature type shows but poor for action TV or DVD/Blu-ray. The second was a plasma 2006 and the has been the gold standard for everything except weight, thickness, and power consumption . When looking at my LG LD550 on it's own, I love the picture quality and my brain is just fine with what at this point in time it perceives as what is normal viewing. Put it next to the plasma and it's not hard to pick out and see distortions in fast action. I get that you get how 120Hz works by creating extra frames, but you seem to be focusing on the glass as though it were nearly empty (vs) the glass being nearly full as the quality of the chip / processor that handles the interpreting. By no means is it perfect and some sets / makers \ lines do an awful job of it. That doesn't mean it has no place or improvement in content, not just for 24P content. There is no doubt there are a huge amount of subjective options that come into play as to whether 120Hz is necessary, improves, or hurts content and to me the quality of how it's done matters greatly, but this statement "Beyond judder issues, the human eye can't see much difference at rates above 60 hz anyways" is another subjective one. I can see the difference watching HD content between the Plasma, the new LCD, and the new LCD w/ 120Hz Tru-motion turned up. I've left it on (some times intentionally, sometimes not) and had people over to watch a show, movie or they wanted to flip to a game. It's a funny reaction in most people because they start doing all sorts of strange facial and head moves in response. It's anything but undetectable to the human eye (again completely depends on the content) and really how much movement is present. I'm not knocking the PQ of this TV. My point for writing is, it's a feature, you may think it's a gimmick but so would a lot of people say about any feature they don't use, have or like for example 3D. You may not like it or think it's completely messing up because it's not perfect neither is anything, but when processed correctly it can improve smooth viewing anywhere from modestly to significantly and can match or improve to a plasma 60Hz or better. The big issue though is that LG is lying and false marketing a feature the TV doesn't & can't posses. I'm not saying that ruins the TV at all. I think most non-sports fanatics are running their truly capable LCD's with 120Hz in standard non-interpolated mode. That doesn't mean what LG did was OK!
