Tankless systems are at a disadvantage in colder climates, since they can only raise the temperature so much.

I would have thought that most people would have it somewhere in the house that is at room temperature, like 68 to 70 F. Am I wrong? |

We just replaced a 50 gallon propane tank, emergency service as it was leaking. We used our heating contractor and the total cost was $1300 installed. We called them at 9 pm and the new tank was installed and working by noon the next day. I would say your Home Depot quote is out of line.

Water heaters are about the most if not the most efficient appliance in your house. So there is not a lot of recurring financial hit over a tankless system. I think a tankless system would run me at least 3x the cost over a conventional tank. I don't see any ROI on that. Although I am not sure of the lifespan of one of those units. Once our heating system goes South, we are going to investigate geo-thermal systems. If the rebates on those remain until we are ready to buy, they will cost the same as a conventional system with the added benefit of "free" hot water with the included hot water interface. Hot water is a byproduct of geo-thermal systems.

http://www.sharkbite.com/usa/prod...gory_id=24 It was literally 10 seconds to install with no leaks. I can't say enough good things about them. I got comparisons coming out my ears and she never can hit the pause

Before you go crazy and install two 50 gallon tanks for only 25 gallons of additional water over a single 75 gallon tank, consider raising the temperature of your hot water. I heated mine to 115 degrees and never ran out. When I got married I had to crank it to 135 degrees because it wasn't hot enough for her and she would drain my 50 gallon tank. Even at 135 she can still empty in with a long shower with water so hot it burns me!
I'd recommend going back with what you have, a standard gas water heater. As a builder, I've installed tankless heaters for clients over the years with mixed results. Usually they either love them or hate them. I try to educate them but most bury their head in the sand and "read online" or "have a friend with the smallest Rinnai and uses it to run a 12 bay carwash so it will work at my house just fine". Then they don't accept the fact that a tankless system is NOT an instant hot water system (tank, circulating pump, hot lines insulated and in a loop...) and disagree that you can't (reliably or cost effectively) combine the two. So then they get angry when they have to wait for the water to get hot just like you would with a standard water heater. And then they call during a January ice storm when it has been 5 degrees for 3 days straight and complain their showers aren't as hot as they are in July when it is 104 outside. This of course is all after they paid 5x the cost of a standard water heater even though I explained everything above (remember their "friend said it would work"). I don't doubt that they save gas, but I cant imagine them paying for themselves before they break or wear out. What's in my house? A 50 gallon Marathon electric water heater made by Rheem. |
