Are these about the same size as North Face? I wear medium for NF jackets.

This jacket is just a shell. It is very compact and great for taking to Europe, but expect to layer. One complaint people have had about this jacket is that it is somewhat like a garbage bag because it does not breathe well. I have noticed this to be somewhat true but I don't really mind it because I do not use it as active wear.

I can't really comment on the fitting since I ordered a Tall Large and I don't have other items that are a similar size.

I actually have a NF Venture jacket and am wondering if there would be too much overlap if I were to get this. With the Venture, I can relate to that statement about it feeling like a "garbage bag" due to breathability. I may still get one for my wife but I'm on the fence now...

Sounds like it - you'll need to layer to get that warmth. It seems like it will trap heat well so at least you'll stay warm (and dry)

Correct. Although it does trap body heat somewhat because it doesn't breathe well.

the vaporshell is an excellent product. Kind of a shame backcountry is doing away with the stoic brand, they had some really awesome stuff way cheaper than the "name" brands.

No, this is probably the cheapest this particular jacket has been, although I have seen better jackets for about the same / even less. Keep in mind this is coming from the perspective of someone who is pretty demanding of my outerwear... I snowboard, snowshoe, mountain bike, backpack / hike pretty much year round. I guess your "average" person who needs a rain jacket for the 2 minute trek from the parking lot to their office probably wouldn't need or appreciate the benefits of more "technical" gear, and by no means is it a BAD product.
