This is a nice jacket for the money. My wife has a Precip and I wear a Mountain Hardwear Epic (DryQ) shell. I would say they are fairly similar in performance and price. These are very lightweight shells. All they are designed for is keeping water and wind off you - period. If you want warmth then layer up. They can get clammy inside if its 80 + degrees out and pouring but almost any jacket will. What is nice about these is they are very light, very packable and very waterproof. Its super easy to stash one in a pack, car, etc and its there when needed and when it isnt it doesnt weigh enough or take up enough room to notice.
Agree with the other posts 100%. Buy a dedicated sport wash for this or any rain shell and dry on medium heat and you are good. Once the DWR does wear off buy a wash in or spray on product and it will keep it going. Dirt and body oils kill DWR as fast as anything else so keep it clean. The wash in / spray on stuff doesnt last nearly as long as the factory coating but it keeps water beading and is cheap/easy to reapply when needed. |

About 3 years ago my wife needed a lightweight rain jacket for a Costa Rica trip and decided to forego her Arcteryx Theta and pick up a Marmot Precip. We typically buy nothing less than the best in outdoor gear because we work it to extremes. In this case, although of course a DWR coated jacket is not going to perform anything like a serious rain shell, it worked great, keeping her at a comfortable temperature in the Costa Rican jungles and forests and absolutely dry and non-clammy the whole time despite near constant rain. She still wears it to this day whenever she needs a lightweight rain jacket and it is still waterproof.
There is a place for this type of gear, just don't think you're going to bag any big peaks with it. I do believe the Precip is the best of all the manufacturers' lightweight DWR rain jackets, just understand what you are purchasing. Last edited by LonelyHiker; 02-19-2013 at 02:42 PM.. if precip wasn't a PU membrane at all, i would imagine that the waterproof/breathable ratings would be something like 5K/40K. the fact that it is only 12k/15k likely just shows that is is a crappy, but real layer of PU membrane. since this is one of the cheapest jackets you can buy, it's likely that the reviewers were just filling up with sweat that wasn't evaporating fast enough through the 15K layer, or the seams were failing contrast this with water resistant wind shells, like the patagonia houdini or montbell tachyon anorak, which aren't waterproof, but have a DWR finish that keeps light precipitation off, but will wet through once you get enough rain hitting it to get through the DWR |

I've had two of these jackets for about six years (his and her), mostly for boating and kayaking (I got bright orange for safety). While they're not the most breathable, they're great for temps down to the 70s or so without any insulation needed. They keep me bone dry on the wettest rides.
