Synology DiskStation 8-Bay (Diskless) Network Attached Storage (DS1812+) - $949.99

Pretty decent Deal. Amazon always sells these for $999 and this model rarely goes on sale. The rumor is we won't see a 1813+ until after Intel releases their new chips.

Logically that doesn't make sense to me. Synology's *13+ line uses the Freescale P1022 CPU instead of the Intel Atom CPU. That is why the DS213+ and DS413+ are less expensive and have lower performance then the DS212+ and DS412+ respectively.

I could see Synology waiting for Freescale to come out with a new chip before they release the DS1813+ because I don't think the Freescale would handle 8 drives very well. It just seems like since the *13+ line is targeted a budget users they would not make an 8 drive version. I'm not trying to get on to you, I'm just following my thought process to it's logical end. Someone reading your comment might think "I'll wait for the DS1813+ because it will be better". If it comes out it will be cheaper but not better. Nothing has been officially announced on if Synology even has plans for an 1813+ so I can't say anything for sure. I have seen a lot of people assume the DS413+ is better then the DS412+ because it's model number is one digit higher. It's not the case.

What processor does the 2413+ use? I know they skipped the 2412 and went straight to the 2413. I think in the higher models the 13 isn't targeted to budget users.

It has been discussed on the Synology forums and on previous threads. I believe Synology even responded to a couple of people that we wouldn't see a 1513 or 1813 model until the end of the year which would also be after Intel releases their next lineup. I am at work so I can't search for the various threads.

Synology is a great brand. I love my ds411slim.

Synology's margin on these must be pretty impressive. Basically you're buying a tiny motherboard, with a weak processor and lots of SATA channels. There's very little RAM, no hard drive, no optical drive, no video chip, no sound chip, and no monitor and all the other stuff one would find in a PC at this price point. Just sayin'

Their stuff IS pretty awesome at what it does. I use their 212+ for onsite backup storage for customers systems. They just work.

I have N40L + P410 (512MB cache) for little over $300 (lucky to get good deals), can accommodate up to 6 disks. Performance would be much better with dedicated RAID card plus it's MUCH cheaper

Depends on what you need - these sip power compared to always on PC and have all the built in apps for media sharing, remote access, time machine backups, iTunes server, lite web/email server, etc. If you're handy you can do all of this with a PC, but for many the Synology value prop is ease of use.

I love Synology especially the IOS apps free of charge. I have the 212+, but if I had extra $ then I would jump on this deal. It is the best network NAS ever!!!!

Apples to oranges....this is meant to be smaller and more power-efficient than a dedicated storage 'server' and has excellent streaming/hosting software built-in. You're paying for warranty, support, software, and power savings. Not to mention it has dual NICs and is virtualization certified.

Does this only support Sata 2? And maybe it doesn't matter because spinning disks probably could not push that. Just want to know if I got WD Red Sata 3's it would work fine.

WD Reds work fine and are on their approved drive list.

My 1812+ has 4 - 3 TB, 3 - 2 TB, and 1 - 1 TB all Reds.
