I have been looking at both Synology and Qnap. From what people on the Synology user forum say, Qnap has better tech support where you actually talk to a person. With Synology, support is handled via email. Anyone have experience with this?
And, Qnap has much better build quality because they have metal cases. You can also hook up a monitor, keyboard and mouse to access and manage the NAS, and they can now be connected directly to a TV via the HDMI port on them. For me, it's a really tough choice at which way to go. Any recommendations? |

At least according to the comparison chart [qnap.com] the SS-839 doesn't support 3.5 drives. |

If you can't fill it right away with 3TB (which, when I bought, the 3TB were $199!) it certainly sounds good. That said, whether you "heard" of them or not is bit of perspective, they are both market leaders, and I'm not sure what the market share is between them, but imagine it's close. Edit: Dated, but I confirmed my guess that they were close in market share, at least in 2011.. http://www.storagenewsletter.com/...rs-in-2011 Last edited by BlueLightSpcial; 02-19-2013 at 05:11 PM.. |

I never read anything bad on Qnap, but for some reason it didn't come up often enough to make me look into them. I might have to look into the reseller/not for resale option when I am ready for my next NAS. |

Streaming directly from the HDMI port works great. You can use this video as reference http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=li-Ok--Cv1I its what I watch to give me a good grasp on the streaming capabilities with XBMC. You can also stream your video files from the NAS directly with their Qfile app to your android, iphones, or ipads. Love the QNAP so far, but this synology looks pretty good too. I heard that Synology mobile apps are a bit more polished. Any one have more insight on the Synology apps? |
