how does this compare to the DS1812? Is the CPU any difference? Not sure I need 4 lan ports.
If I recall the ds1812/ds1512 are not tooless drive cages. Dont they have to be screwed in. ?? |

The CPU is the same based off that link since the 1812 has the 2700 also according to the wiki [synology.com]. . Strange they haven't made any official announcements. This seems to be the only link mentioning it. Last edited by brennok; 03-15-2013 at 09:07 AM.. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

http://www.engadget.co Synology is freaking killing me with this crap. I'll buy a Thecus if they make me. The details on the DS1513+ and 1813+ are out. You get screwless drive trays and 4 gigabit ports instead of 2. Everything else is the same. Who even has a router that supports port bonding anyway? You can't get the speed benefit for 2 ports let alone 4. These are not upgrades for a home user. Synology is clearly targeting these at businesses. So why should they put in the Atom CE5300? Businesses are not concerned with being able to hardware transcode and stream video.

I don't think the average consumer is using 5+ bays especially with 3-4TB drives becoming commonplace and affordable. Don't get me wrong I would love to see these aimed at the consumer, but I realize the average consumer isn't looking to have a 24TB NAS. |

http://us.hardware.inf I see your point about most home users not needing 24TB's of storage and why Synology would think that also. Here is why I think differently. 1) The Atom CE5300 is designed to transcode and stream 1080p video. If I'm away from home and I want to watch something from my NAS my internet connection is not going to be able to handle a 1080p stream. The CE5300 is designed to convert that 1080p stream to 480p or 720p at a bitrate that my internet connection can handle without constant buffering. If I'm buying a NAS for this purpose that means I have a lot of 1080p video which requires a lot of space. Probably not 24TB's but maybe 9 or 10TB's. A 2 bay NAS is only going to give me 4TB's max in a RAID1 config. You have to give me at least a 4 bay for a RAID5 or a 5 bay for a RAID6. 2) The beauty of the 1812+ or 1813+ is that it gives you 8 bays which is a lot of room to grow. From a business standpoint price is not an issue. I'm going to fill whatever NAS up with 4TB enterprise drives. As a home user Synology's SHR technology is vital to me because I can use different size drives without wasting space. Lets say I have 4 2TB drives that I am keeping my movies on right now and 2 1TB drives laying around. The 1812+ lets me use all those drives to give myself 8TB's of backed up space right now with the option to add 2 more drives or upgrade to larger drives for more space in the future when drive prices come down. |

. Already added the ds513 since I wanted to expand it. I would have gone for the 2413+ but they jump up way too much in price. While I don't see it happening maybe they plan to offer a consumer version of the 1513+ and 1813+ with the new Atom minus the extra ports and unnecessary home features? It could also be a case where the cost of the CE500 was too high which is why they added somewhat odd upgrades to the 1513+ and 1813+. This way they could at least roll out new models so people stop asking where it is. It also lets them avoid a price increase. Then when the price falls on the CE500 they will release 5 and 8 bay models with it possibly as an early 14+ model. |
