I'm tempted, but going to wait for the 5" version to go on sale. Samsung phones have notoriously bad GPS chips, and mine and my wife's GSIIs are no exceptions. We can't rely on them at all (takes forever to get a signal, then signal will drop RIGHT when you need Nav assistance the most). Stand-alone is the way to go IMO.

I got a Garmin about a year ago that came with lifetime map updates (which I do think is an important feature). The device came with maps that covered most of north america, but I discovered that when I go to update the maps, it tells me that the current map update is far too large to fit on my device and I need to select a specific region that I would like to update (for example: east coast, northeast, west coast, southeast, Canada, etc...). Any maps outside the selected region update are unavailable.

Instead of using Garmin Lifetime Map Updater, just go to Garmin web site and use their Dashboard as an alternative way of updating maps. It works much better. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To get rid of ads on this unit, you'd have to purchase Garmin's HD traffic receiver https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=104181 This unit is compatible with it. However, it is worth noting that traffic information they supply (HD or not) is pretty useless. Last edited by AndreyT; 02-20-2013 at 11:38 AM.. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

This is a good deal but one thing to consider on these is the mounts. The only thing keeping me using a standalone GPS is the powered mount I have on the 700 series garmin. You don't realize how much of a difference they make until you have used one. Being able to quickly pop the GPS on and off the mount without any cables with one hand is priceless. This model does not have a powered mount so you have to plug the cord into the back of the unit manually each time you remove and remount it. The older 24xx models had powered mount, the 700 series has a powered mount, the nice high end 3xxx models have one, the older 23xx had one.
I am not knocking this particular deal but if I have to plug in a power cord manually every time I use the thing or leave it in the windshield begging to be stolen I will just use my phone. |
