Is there any value to Six Sigma belt certifications?

No idea why a company in your industry would value such a cert, since I don't see any long term or terribly useful application for it. From my experience in manufacturing and industry, they really want a black belt and experience.

I would take it only if they paid for it but honestly it is worthless to anyone who has ever been involved with this type of stuff. It looks good on paper (the certificate and the Six Sigma idea itself) but reality is not kind to it.

Yeah the certification looks good on a resume and may help you land a job. That's about it.

Consider the black belt, but having said that it depends on the line of work you want to go into. Very important to manufacturing in the high volume arena.

Here's my experience.
Green belt is typically something a company asks most of their employees to get because it gives people the understanding and lingo to talk about process improvement, waste, etc... but no real application in fixing the problems. I see this a lot with marketing/sales type people.

Black belt is a good cert if you do operations, process improvement, consulting type work where you need to improve a current system or develop a new process. The unfortunate thing about it is there is no governing body to the certification. So lots of crappy institutions make you overpay and get certified when it is essentially meaningless to companies that want you to have it on your resume. The most accredited will probably be ASQ. But for a lot of companies they make you go through their program once you get hired, since their is no governing body saying you know everything.

Along with that, you could spend a couple hundred bucks for some study materials, a couple hundred for the ASQ exam and save a lot of money. Since again, you getting a black belt cert from University of ______ means nothing to a lot (read: most) companies that are desiring a black belt qualified person anyway, because they will want you to take their own internal program/cert.
