Yeah, thats pretty much true nowadays. You can get some good deals on the used market though, I snagged a 32 gig for $15 shipped.

How so? If you read the link I posted the XLR8 Pro benchmarks almost exactly the same as the XLR8. The big difference is an optional 5yr vs 3yr warranty if you register with PNY.

When Chaos decreed that a random group of neurons fire late last night causing me to volunteer an answer, I was mostly thinking of how the products are positioned in the market and of NAND flash endurance.

This XLR8 is a 3K endurance drive. Surprise, so is the XLR8 Pro. Who knew? (Well, anyone that read the specs, but other than that...)

With equivalent flash NAND, any SandForce 28xx SSD is going to perform pretty much like any other SandForce SSD with a 28xx series controller.

Since both XLR8s use "Synchronous-Mode 3K P/E rated Multi-Level Cell (MLC)," there you go. (Seem to recall that SandForce offers manufacturers more features and / or somewhat enhanced performance options for more money, but that's basically it.)

The SanDisk Extreme uses "24nm synchronous Toggle Mode HBL NAND flash."

In general: Toggle > Synchronous >> Asynchronous.

Furthermore, the XLR8 seems to be positioned as PNY's entry level product, outperforming the basic "Sandisk SSD," BTW (the closest market equivalent). In contrast, the SanDisk Extreme is targeted at enthusiasts or for performance applications. ("graphic intense games and applications").

So, No, I can't say that the PNY XLR8 is better than the SanDisk Extreme, which was the question.
