i see alot of these gun threads on SD. i have a question why are these small handguns always so expensive in America, theyre like 400-600 bucks for a handgun not even a rifle which cost over 1000 bucks. this country is the worlds top producer and exporter of small arms so WHY are they so expensive???? this country has produced guns for over 200 years with many innovations, lower costs and larger output due to economies of scale, etc but why are they still expensive? a handgun should cost about $100 and a rifle should be $500, yet this isnt the case. handguns and rifles are CHEAPER in almost all other countries. so why the hell are they so expensive here? is there some federal goverment tax or tariff that keeps the guns prices ARTIFICALLY high?????? does the goverment prohibit mass production of these guns beyond a certain quota to keep supply LOW while demand is high in America????? anyone know? thanks
You think you know the whole story? Think Again.

Some states have mandatory fees and taxes, others don't. Here in CA FFLs charge anywhere from $35 to $150 to process an handgun similar to this (as noted earlier this gun can't easily be purchased in CA, although if you really want it there are ways to legally get it - but it's not easy). The ONLY way to find out what your FFL charge would be is to call around and ask. |

I don't think this is manufactured in USA. And yes, there are numerous tariffs and taxes on firearms. Also, this gun probably costs more than $100 to manufacture. Glocks cost about $80, but their machining is a whole lot simpler than this, plus they have the economy of scale. Not to mention that currently there's huge demand, many manufacturers are months behind delivery with backed up orders. |

AFAIK, a great number of handguns are made outside of the US. Springfield has a contract for over 2 milion handguns with HS in Croatia, Glock is made in Austria, Beretta in Italy, etc. I dont actually know if there is one US made handgun that is top of the line at this point. |

Prices have little to do with cost - the price is just what the seller has agreed to exchange said item for.
You can buy handguns for a couple hundred bucks, they just aren't the sexy brand names - maybe they are as good, maybe they aren't. You can also buy ugly rifles for a couple hundred bucks as well - again, not the sexy, uber tactical assault weapons, but they are available. |

Because you may have experienced one firearm in your lifetime that didn't live up to your expectations, doesn't mean the whole company produces bad 9mm firearms. Pretty sure Beretta isn't the oldest manufacturer of firearms by putting out the trash every year. ![]() Last edited by PirateMorgan; 02-20-2013 at 01:24 PM.. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

You guys should look into eastern european surplus. Much cheaper than this, plus more reliable, better made, and will actually appreciate in value (most of the time). You can buy a makarov for about $200 online. Just google Surplus Firearms.
And knock off the politics, this isn't FB and we all like guns here I'm assuming. Last edited by BenN2020; 02-20-2013 at 01:41 PM.. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |
