AT&T detect your phone and add data plan automatically. Recently I had big fight with their customer care. They refused to remove $20 data plan because now it is their policy if you use smartphone then you have to buy their monthly plan.

I would suggest go for MVNO like ptel or straight talk with these phones. You will save lot of money in long run

fighting with them will lead you nowhere...it will only make them force the issue more..

politely asking for it to be removed as you didn't know about would have probably worked and tell them you'll get another phone [NOT!]....in other words, play dumb and engage your csr in small talk...

It will get the same 2G EDGE services that the iPhone 3G/4/4S/5 gets on T-Mobile unless you live in the "refarm" cities. Some have been officially announced some are slowly popping up. Best point of reference is the sightings map at http://airportal.de/. Overall you will have a smaller 3G footprint than the normal 3G T-Mo footprint as the refarm won't mirror their current 3G footprint for years if ever.

You''re better off getting a Straight Talk AT&T SIM from Walmart and paying for the $45 a month "Unlimited" (2 gig estimated cap) Voice/Data plan. I ported my T-Mobile number over to there and couldn't be happier on an international unlocked Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

Trying to decide if I should pick one of these up for my old lady. I have her on an international unlocked Galaxy Note 1. She has been hinting at wanting something newer.

That's most likely the T-Mo S3 Mini variant... No one has a line on what the S4 or if there will be any "mini" variants of it. I can almost guarantee they will continue production of the S3 even as the S4 comes out in a few months. For example they have continued making and selling S2's after the S3's came out.
