Whatever you do, don't buy a Dyson. I bought a DC 33 (canister model with turbine head) and it is a terrible vacuum. The turbine head barely spins when placed on carpet (not thick pile carpet either, just regular old carpet), and the smallest thing clogs the damn thing up. I have a dog and a cat, and the vacuum refuses to pick up the cat hair and pushes the dog hair into a big clump at the front of the turbine head. I really wanted to love it when I bought it (BF 2011), but damn if I don't hate myself for spending that much on a vacuum. My 30 + year old, hand-me-down Rainbow vacuum still can almost suck the carpet of the floor and collects so much crap in the water bin that you would think I never have vacuumed my house.

Because there is one in every crowd. Probably doesn't like sex either.

For what they are they are awesome, and we have one on both floors of our rather large house. Do they have quirks and aren't perfect, well, back to the sex thing for that answer. I love ours, but yes, they are sketchy on getting stuff right next to the walls, and yes, contrary to the manual, some day you will get dust in the belt/drive and have to pull it out with tweezers, and third, my dust bin does get too full too quick and could be larger, but outside of those minor quirks, these things beat my old roombas hands down.

So we do some touch up with a vacuum cleaner once a month, and while doing that , the thought of going back to the days of vacuuming the whole house is terrifying. Neato forever!!!!

Add me to the thumbs-up crowd for the Neato. Bought the XV-21 (As others have said, same unit, different brushes and filter) off an earlier SD and love it. If you take 5 minutes and prepare the area ahead of time it really helps.

My run times have been over an hour. Plus it returns to it's base, charges, then goes back to where it left off and finishes the job. I'd definitely recommend it.

does it really clean well? Ive been wanting one of these forever

I have 2 dogs and 2 females in the house and on our hardwood it does not require removing hair form the brush often. It is a good idea to take the brush out once a month and remove stuff frmo the sides just to keep it fighting fit. The Standard xv-11 is actually more like plastic flaps that smack dirt and hair and let the suction grab it than a traditional brush. The Pet/alergy kit or xv-21 has a more traditional brush that would work better on carpet but would also need to be cleaned more often I imagine.

I had one. The annoyances I had with it were, getting close to the walls and it wouldnt fit under my couch like my roomba. One time it did manage to get under the couch and it got stuck!

I didn't see anybody mentioning that this model is $199 at Costco B&M until mid-March (maybe the 24, but I'm not positive about the date).
They call it XV-14, but it's the same model: maybe it has some more accessories included, knowing Costco.

I got this during the January sale. I used to have a Roomba, about four years ago, that quit after six months or so. I didn't follow up on the warranty.

The Neato is about five times easier to use, with a much more convenient dust tray and, most critically, the brush. With Roomba, the hair entanglement on the brush would often reach epic proportions. I also prefer the patterns that the Neato makes on the carpet to those made by the old Roomba. I got one with the pet/allergy attachment, but I have not put that one this machine yet. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using the attachment?

It does seem that Neato's battery discharges quicker than what the Roomba used to do. But, the Neato gets stuck much less often and, in my one month's usage, has not yet failed to come back to base station to refuel when needed, and resume the job from where it left off.

I am so tempted to get another one so that I can have one on each floor of my two-storied home.

The Neato Pet kit is basically just a brush that is better able to handle pet hair (and easier to clean), and a beefier Hepa filter (purple framed). Not really any reason not to do it, especially if you have any pets.

I got mine in the recent Groupon deal and its working great. Scheduled it to run in the morning while I'm out, come home to a dustbin half filled with Cat hair and Dust. Had to rearrange everything to make it Neato friendly so it could do its thing without getting stuck on cords or random clutter.
