Sony RX100 $568 with trade-in for any old/broken camera YMMV

My RX100 fits in my front jeans pocket. Both of these cameras offer excellent image quality in there category but I still believe they are different categories for all that. Besides the sensor, the autofocus on the RX100 works better than all of the Canon P&S that I've owned, even the G-series. And the technology packed into the RX100 is simply amazing.

Rx100 definitely has a decent AF system--it has what, 25 focus points? The powershot S-series is somewhere around 5-9 by comparison. Take it for what it's worth, but my Nex 5R has significantly faster focusing vs Rx100.

Has anyone else tried this deal? I have a really old Fuji Finepix A340 that I could get rid of and I have been eyeing the rx100 for awhile. I don't know if I would get anything for that. I have been scoping out ebay as well, but this is as good of a deal and now used.

Just call the number in Adorama's product page and talk to the sales rep if you are unsure what your camera's worth.

The product link say that you have buy first then they discount the price after you sent the camera in, etc. But in my case, my A300, while it is not broken, is practically worthless. So SteveC on the phone just sold me the RX100 for $568 with $80 discount. He said that we can deal with the trade-in later. But I think that it is like an instant $80 discount. You could probably get more discount if you trade in something like an S100 where there is a resale value.

I also attached my receipt so you can see. The trade-in camera is not even listed in the receipt.

I also think they have a deal with Sony but I am surprised that B & H does not offer a similar deal.

They currently have a deal for the RX100, a 32GB SDHC memory card, camera case, and lens cleaning kit bundle for $649 [adorama.com]. It looks like the promotion applies to this bundle, so you can get the extras for a buck to make the deal a little sweeter!

I would like to know if anyone was able to get more than $80 off... if so with which camera trade-in.

At half the price the LX7 is the clear winner here. The sony is nice, but not $300 nicer. The LX7 lens is a home run. full zoom it is still at 2.3F

sony= Aperture F1.8-4.9

bokeh on the LX7 is very nice. the person commenting about the lack of DOF clearly has never used one. there is plenty of DOF even at 2.3F. People spend thousands of dollars for F2.8 zooms and this thing is F2.3 @ 90mm. thats amazing.

Assuming pocketability isn't a big factor then the LX7 is pretty nice. (it also does better macro then RX100)

However for a pocketable camera the RX100 is top dog.

Great camera.

I owned several micro 4/3rd, sony NEX 5, Canon T2i, etc, then ended up with the RX100 due to the portability and close to DSLR image quality. I just found myself too lazy to carry a larger than pocket camera all the time. (even on trips).

The price is on the higher side but it really has no competition in its segment.

The LX7 definitely does have a better MFD--I am regularly annoyed by how far back I have to get my shots with the Rx100.

RX100 images look a LOT better than comparable LX7 shots. I've also found the RX100 autofocus to be much more dependable. The LX7 has given me too many focusing duds.

Actually, that's not true. The RX100 is significantly better in every respect worth mentioning. The LX7 only just BARELY eeks by in DoF at 90mm. If you employ a DoF calculator, you'll see that the RX100 easily wins at 28mm. Obviously the LX7 would win the shutterspeed war beyond 28mm--but the RX100 has significantly cleaner high-ISO vs the LX7. Image for image, the LX7 ends up looking like a toy compared to the RX100--from my own sample shootout the other day. The RX100 is easily worth the extra $300, and I'm offloading the LX7 for that reason.

Larger sensor vs faster lens--they offset one another to a degree. The faster f/1.4-f/2.3 lens does not make for superior images vs the RX100. The LX7 is a huge improvement over the LX5, but compared to the RX100? It's not even close--RX100 is better by a wide margin.

Don't be so quick to judge one as better than the other without owning both!
