Someone posted about this computer before, but I don't know if they realize you can use the new $75 Staples coupon to knock the price down to $265 + tax....I thought I had better alert some people who want to get a great deal on this computer. Here's the link to the computer at Office Depot.....I just picked one up at my local OD here in Nashville

Stopped by OD and checked out the laptop, seemed OK. Unfortunately, moments before I was to be rung up it was decided that all the laptops had been put on hold by customers calling ahead, so no laptop for me.
Funny thing on the laptop, it has a dedicated button by the power button, apparently for the purpose of doing factory restores. Kind of disconcerting that the laptop should have a dedicated button just for factory restores, and placed right next to the power button.

I managed to score the laptop but they only had the display unit so i got that. They did have the box, battery & manual (still in the plastic) and charger. I noticed the display unit didn't have the win8 cdkey attached to the laptop. How would I get that. I know there are software tools to get key from OS but if I sell this down the road or reinstall OS, I would need the key.

would exchanging it with another store be a potential solution?

Just called my local OD store in IN they checked and still had one NIB unit. I asked about accepting the Staples $75 coupon and advised would not accept it even though it is a Staples technology coupon. Also he mentioned the laptop is already marked down $140.
How much it is marked down has NOTHING to do with it. They still price match AND take coupons UNLESS the item is clearance!

Just came back from local OD, they have 3 in stock but manager refused to honor the coupon, he said they called Staples and Staples do not have same model, so they won't match the coupon.
So it really up to the store manager to take the coupon or not.
Good luck though. The store where has it is in zip 60173.
Model # doesn't enter into it! You aren't asking for a price match you are asking them to accept a competitor coupon that is NOT model specific. Staples HAS comparable computers and unless they would prefer you to buy form them they should honor the corporate policy AND the coupon!

Sure do feel for all you guys having problems. Luckily my Indiana store is pretty good about actually wanting to HELP the customer be happy! woot

Same, mine went through with no problems, didn't even involve a manager at my Fort Wayne store.

Anything you didn't like about the Lenovo? Or a particular reason you decided to go with the Toshiba?

It would not boot with my 4g/wifi/bluetooh card installed in the minipci slot. Since I need the unit with that card installed it was worthless to me.

the wifi card MUST be on lenovo's white list with the proper firmware in it to work with a lenovo.

Its done on a lot of business targeted laptops because of how the PCIe bus works. Its possible to spy on a lot of the on-goings in a computer over it, making restricting what can be connected to the PCIe bus somewhat important.
The same was true to a far lesser extent about PCI.

Tho yeah, I agree that this method stinks. It would be better to require the BIOS password when a new hardware change occurs
(which if unset would assume you don't care, and if you don't have a boot time password... and access to the bios. Well. There are far easier ways than the PCIe bus to extract data from a computer)

Nope, i was told it was a fcc thing with the antenna by lenovo support. They said I could buy a new card (and loose my grandfathered plan by I digress) from lenovo for 200 bucks. I paid 12 bucks for the one I already have.

For me, back to the store it went.

Funny isn't it? they will "hold" the pc for a "online" someone with no deposit and rip it from the hands of a paying customer.

I see it as a big fail. you want to "hold" it for pickup. pay for it.

My story today:

Ask the wife to pick up another laptop for a co-worker since it was on her back from shopping. I had checked just before she went and the system showed two in stock(one on display and one NIB). She calls me and said that they told her that they didn't have any in stock. I checked the online inventory and it still showed that two was in stock.

I called and ask to see if they had Item # 983842 in stock then got put on hold. The female employee comes back and tells me that they're out of those. I requested to see if they have a display model on the floor cause I just check the online inventory and it showed 2 avaiable. She puts me on hold and then the manager came into play.

He tells me this: "Was that your wife that came in earlier. I'm sorry that your wife was mistakenly misinformed but we do have one available for purchase but if you're going to use the Staples $75 coupon then it has to have a different bar code. We cannot honor that coupon if it has the same bar code."

The information I got from this call was:
1. They lied to my wife
2. They lied to me
3. The manager knew well that all the coupons would have the same bar code that's why he had used that excuse
4. Most likely someone in the store is trying to hold onto that laptop and purchase it later with the coupon.

I chated online with Kaden who was very professional and offered to help me.
Kaden stated that he/she will email me a OD $75 computer/laptop coupon without any restrictions and will send a mandatory request for the store to reserved the laptop in my name.

I should be getting the OD $75 coupon by email in a couple of hours and call to verify that the reserved laptop is ready for pickup. Big Grin

So do you know if this laptop has 1 4gb or 2 2gb memory cards? Just wanted to understand what I should buy to upgrade it to 8gb, any recommendations?

I just got two of them today from two different locations. I could have easily scored more (not bragging, just saying that I didn't horde as much as I could have). Neither of the managers batted an eye, so I think they were lying out their a$$es on the whole "corporate memo" thing.
Yea, that's what i figured as well. The lady that checked me out seemed real wishy-washy about why exactly they couldn't take it, then when i pressed, she was like "the manager said that there was a memo from corporate...maybe the other stores didn't read their email". Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

Once i got back to work, i did an online chat and supposedly someone's gonna contact me to rectify the situation, but we'll see. I may just check another store after work, and then return this one later.

I just came back from OD down the street from my work. Since it was only 2 miles away - I thought I'd give it a try but I got shut down fast. The guy already had to turn down a few people before me and said they will not honor because Staples do not have the G580 in stock and they stand firm on their policy. He also refuted the discount by saying that by taking the -140 discount over the -75 discount from Staples I am getting the better deal. Spoke to another lady who said that there was one guy who got away with it before they "caught on". Looks like the early birds were getting the deal and now that they are catching on, they are quick with the refusal.
