Someone posted about this computer before, but I don't know if they realize you can use the new $75 Staples coupon to knock the price down to $265 + tax....I thought I had better alert some people who want to get a great deal on this computer. Here's the link to the computer at Office Depot.....I just picked one up at my local OD here in Nashville

http://www.officedepot.com/a/prod...uter-With/

here's a link to the coupon.

No, I am actually in Mississippi. They call it brown, but it actually looks more of a grey color to me. I told my wife that it was brown and she still doesn't believe me.
Thanks this is giving me hope to possibly trying it today. btw were there more left at your OD

I didn't realize that there were multiple threads for the G580. This is the most recent and active it looks like.

I'm going to include me using the coupon at Staples also as a "cool story". I've continued to heavily compare the G580 from OD to the Z580 from Staples. I went ahead and bought them both while they were in stock with the intention of taking one back after deciding.

Original price from Staples for Z580 is $700 with $200 instant savings and the $75 coupon for $275 off. Subtotal of $425 which is a total of ~~ 40% off.

Original price from OD for G580 is $480 with $140 instant savings and the $75 coupon for $215 off. Subtotal of $265 which is a total of ~~ 45% off.

I actually had an easier time getting the coupon honored at OD than at Staples believe it or not. I think it was part of the Staples Tech Consultant's pitch though to get me to buy the extended warranty. Staples said the coupon wasn't good on clearance items and the Z580 should be considered a clearance item. That's why it was discounted so much already. They'd "try to somehow" get the system to accept it as a favor to me though. I listened but said no and that I wouldn't consider buying anything unless they honored their own coupon of all things. Anyhooo....

There's another OD near me that has both a G580 and their version of the Z580 on display and didn't mind me testing them out some. Overall build quality of the Z580 looks nicer but the hinge on the G580 looks sturdier. Trackpad on the Z580 seems better so I'll use an external mouse with the G580 always. Add a USB BT adapter to the G580 also.

Spec wise the Z580 should seem to be better as it has an i5 instead of i3 and more RAM. Processor benchmark for the i3 though is 3516 while the i5 is only 3835. I guess the turbo doesn't always help.

Boot times seemed to vary but around 22 to 25 seconds seemed to be about right for both from complete shutdown to being in Metro when hitting the On button. Sometimes one took less time, sometimes one took more.

I had a pretty fast Transcend USB drive with me loaded with portable applications so I could test the laptops somewhat as I'd use them. Both could process video files faster than the USB drive could handle. I also had a portable office application which could handle processing the 15 MB spreadsheet faster than I could manipulate the pivot table.

I'm not going to use it for intensive gaming as I stick to a console system for that. I will download the occasional sale from Steam but either of these should be able to handle those games.

Overall the G580 seems to suit my current needs, and I can't justify the additional $160 for the i5. I'll put it towards getting some sort of 5th or 6th generation something in a few years.

Would you happen to live in Louisiana? Also is the actual color of the computer brown?
Believe it or not it is brown. It looks like it's more of a gunmetal in person though. The lid has a glossy plastic black bezel around the display. There's a brown brushed aluminum plate around the keyboard and trackpad area. The back of the display is a brown brushed finish plastic.

Can't get ANY audio when HDMI is plugged in! Sheesh, I had no idea it would be this difficult. Was just trying to watch episodes of Supernatural.
You may be using an older style HDMI cable. Some of them only have video, no audio.

Just came back from local OD, they have 3 in stock but manager refused to honor the coupon, he said they called Staples and Staples do not have same model, so they won't match the coupon.
So it really up to the store manager to take the coupon or not.
Good luck though. The store where has it is in zip 60173.
This is unfortunate as the coupon is for "any Windows 8/RT laptop". It is not model specific. Plus Staples also has good deals the coupon is compounded on. For example:

http://www.staples.com/Toshiba-Sa...uct_136822

It's not as though Staples put the coupon out there instead of putting their laptops on sale. They put their laptops on sale with comparable discounts to OD's and then had a coupon in addition too.

This seems possibly better/easier than just Dual booting W7 (since it might have problems with too many partitions) which I was planning on doing. Wait it seems like only Windows 8 "Pro" can downgrade. Hmmm yeah I really just need the instructions from that past guy who switched to W7 normally

Dual booting (having W7 installed while still having W8 as well) doesn't void the one year warranty right?
Reading this thread I think you may have answered the question as regarding Windows 8 compatible drivers already...

What is your reason for wanting to use something other than Windows 8? I'm personally not looking forward to it (and don't want to get into a debate with other users about it like you've probably seen here & there), but it's Microsoft we're talking about so I might as well get it over with. If I can't stand it there are other shells that can be used.

http://www.infoworld.com/d/micros...3?page=0,0

If I can't be productive with Windows 8 I'll probably try "Classic Shell" or do all of my productivity task through a Windows 7 VirtualBox virtual machine.

... when you find a good deal on a USB BlueTooth adapter (if you find one on here or w/e)
I'm currently still just using my corded USB one, but I'll let you know how it goes. It's on my list.

To respectfully answer your question "why" ..... I am a single mother of two girls (5th & 10th grade), I am unemployed and must budget with limited funds, and they share one semi-working computer. To my family, this is an AWESOME deal and both my girls will be thrilled to have a functioning keyboard. I am grateful for the chance to give my kids a well deserved, yet very late, Christmas gift. So to directly answer your "why" ...because I can not afford $500+ for a computer and I am stoked to be getting a $480 computer for $265 that is more than sufficient for our basic everyday needs.
Yes. I agree with you. Why would someone want to only pay $265 for a decent laptop when there are ones out there to be had for $600? Ummmm....

I've tried e-mailing back and forth with customer service and chat. They won't honor the coupon. Any ideas?

Please wait while we find an agent to assist you...

Sam: Hello, t.
Sam: Good Evening. Welcome to Office Depot.
Me: Hello

The item must be in stock at Office Depot site with your zip code and also in stock with the competitor's site and it is also available for purchase at the advertised price.
Sam: May I have your zip code and the item number from Office Depot site and the link from our Competitor's site please for us to verify the item that you want to price match.
Me: 296xx
Me: is the zip
Sam: And also, may I have the coupon code from Staples please for me to check as well?
Me: the coupon is for any windows 8 laptop and they have multiple
Me: give me one moment
Sam: Sure, and may I also have the item number from Office Depot and the link from Staples with the item for me to check if its is identical and also the availability.
Me: code is 99842
Me: item number is 983842
Me: they don't have an identical
Me: They are offering $75 off any laptop
Me: I can send you the search but there are plenty in the $340 price range
Sam: let me go ahead and check if the item is available at Staples.
Me: no large retailer has identical
Sam: Upon checking, the item Lenovo® G580 (59359080) Laptop Computer With 15.6" Screen & 3rd Gen Intel® Core™ i3 Processor, Brown
Item # 983842 is only Sold at the Stores.

Sam: May I have the order number please since you said you purchased the item online?
Me: ot staples?
Sam: From Office Depot.
Me: order number is xxxxxxx-xxx
Sam: Thank you. One moment please for me to check if this item is also in stock at Staples.
Me: np. thank you for your time
Sam: Upon checking, I am not able to locate the item Lenovo® G580 (59359080) Laptop Computer With 15.6" Screen & 3rd Gen Intel® Core™ i3 Processor, Brown
Item # 983842 at Staples site.
Me: There coupon is for any windows 8 laptop
Me: for instance http://www.staples.com/Toshiba-C8...uct_984635
Sam: Yes, but we also need to check if the item you want to use the coupon for is also available at Staples.
Me: They carry lenovo
Me: but like with any large retailer you carry different skus
Me: might be the same model but a different numbering scheme
Sam: Since the coupon is for $75 Windows 8 and if you use the coupon at Staples the item should be in stock also here at Office Depot if you want to match the coupon the item should also be in stock at Staples.
Sam: The Lenovo have 3 different model for G580
Me: My fath in law bought one at the store here in Greenville and used the coupon
Sam: may I have the link form Staples for me to double check?
Me: same one I received with no issues
Me: father
Me: My mistake was buying online forst Smilie
Me: first
Sam: Yes,the store are the ones who check the Competitor's coupons but we do received an update that we can match the coupon here online if the item is also stock at Staples.
Sam: What I can only do is to escalate this issue to our higher management and have them fix this for you immediately.
Sam: May I have your contact number and email address please for them to reach you at?
Me: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Me: thank you
Sam: Thank you, . I will be processing the escalation immediately after this chat so that I can include the transcript. Again we really do apologize for the trouble this has caused you. But is there anything else other than this I can further assist you with today instead?
Me: Is there a manager in your immediate area that can make these decisions?
Me: no other problems. Just don't understand why my FIL got a better deal with no hassles than I did. Smilie
Sam: I really do apologize but our Supervisors are only available until 5 pm. You may try to contact Customer Service at 1-800-463-3768 and ask for US Supervisor.
Me: when I sent him to Office Depot
Sam: The item was processed here online. The Store manager may not be able to match or honor the coupon. But you may try to contact the store if they honor the coupon for your order.
Me: The store manager could issue a credit?
Sam: Since the item was purchased here online, they may not be able to processed the Credit but you may try to contact them if they can make an arrangements.
Sam: But as I checked, here on my end. The Staples site does not carry the item you ordered.
Me: What do you have within your authority? Look I don't want to be a pain. I'd rather be happy and go on my merry way.
Sam: Actually, here online we do not accept Competitor's coupon but early today we received an update that we honor the $75 coupon from Staples but as long as the item is also available or in stock at Staples.
Me: Well pass on my escalation. Thank you for your time and have a good evening. Rob
Sam: yes, I will forward this issue and will send the escalation report for them to contact you with regards to the item you want to use the coupon.
Sam: Is there anything else that I can assist you with?
Me: No.

As we said many times before here, there's no point arguing with OD about this coupon. Either they accept it or not. The rejection is more often than the other.

Some OD managers are even rude about the ordeal. They simply respond "Nope. Can't and won't take this coupon since we're losing $$$ on the deal. Don't care about the wordings on the coupon. Either you buy whatever WITHOUT the coupon or leave our store."

Move on to the next store, assuming you have free time and $$ to spend on gas driving around.

I myself thought it would be too late as of Friday morning. I have read everything about this coupon, both OD's and Staples' threads before I went to purchase one with the coupon. I used "check stock and location" on OD's site. I called 3 stores to find out if they actually had them in stock and asked to hold one for me. I did the same for Staples as a back up plan, which also includes an online order of Toshiba i3. The first store I went to informed me that there was a 'confusion" about the coupon while I was looking at the laptop. I saw a manager at the check out so I knew it was not the best place to try the coupon. The second store for which I am a very good customer honored the coupon without any issue. The manager was called to override but no negative experience. I had a couple of competitor's $10 or $20 off coupons which I could have used but did not as I did not want to have any issue.
If you have more than one OD near you, you may be able to get one with a little homework.

I purchased it online last Sunday before the coupon was in play. I'll argue with them a bit more. I do argue for a living.Smilie

But for $600 I can get one that plays Call of Duty! It is kind of amusing reading posts deriding a $265 laptop. It is what is and so far I've had it for a week and have no issues whatsoever with it. If I want to play Call of Duty, I'll go head over to my Xbox.

I got one last night. I went to an OD near my job but they were oos. She called around and found a store w/one but they wouldn't take the coupon, they other manager mentioned it before she said anything. I went back to work. Called a store near my house and they took the coupon and had one in stock. Picked it up after work.
