Petition to Make Unlocking Cell Phones Legal " The Librarian of Congress decided in October 2012 that unlocking of cell phones would be removed from the exceptions to the DMCA. As of January 26, consumers will no longer be able unlock their phones for use on a different network without carrier permission, even after their contract has expired. Consumers will be forced to pay exorbitant roaming fees to make calls while traveling abroad. It reduces consumer choice, and decreases the resale value of devices that consumers have paid for in full. The Librarian noted that carriers are offering more unlocked phones at present, but the great majority of phones sold are still locked. We ask that the White House ask the Librarian of Congress to rescind this decision, and failing that, champion a bill that makes unlocking permanently legal." https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/...l/1g9KhZG7 Please show the SD effect. |

The constitutions of most of our States and of the United States assert, that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves, in all cases to which they think themselves competent, or they may act by representatives, freely and equally chosen; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed; that they are entitled to freedom of person, freedom of religion, freedom of property, and freedom of the press. -Thomas Jefferson, June 5, 1824

White House Calls for Cellphone 'Unlocking'
WASHINGTON—Americans should be able to take their used cellphones and tablets freely from one wireless carrier to another, the White House said Monday after an intense lobbying campaign from Internet activists. The announcement comes after the Library of Congress, which makes certain rules regarding copyrights, recently barred the "unlocking" of cellphones. That prompted a petition on the White House's website that collected more than 114,000 digital signatures from people calling on the Obama administration to undo the regulatory shift. "Consumers should be able to unlock their cellphones without risking criminal or other penalties," R. David Edelman, an Obama administration adviser on Internet and privacy issues, said in the official response to the petition. "It's common sense, crucial for protecting consumer choice, and important for ensuring we continue to have the vibrant competitive wireless market that delivers innovative products and solid service to meet consumers' needs."
