Not to beat a dead horse, but in the example with your father, you said that he was stretching an 800x600 image onto an WXGA screen. WXGA is a widescreen format ranging from 1366 - 1280 horizontally to 768-720 vertically., i.e. 1366x768 or 1280x 720 (usually). If you divide 1366/768, you get 1.77. Similarly, if you divide 1280/720, you get 1.77. When you divide 800/600, you get 1.33. 1.77 /= 1.33, they are different. Going deeper down the rabbit hole, let's look at screem formats such as 16x9 (widescreen) and the old TV standard 4:3. Dividing 16/9, you get 1.77. Dividing 4/3, you get 1.33. What does this tell us ? It tells us that your dad is taking an image that's in 4:3 format and stretching it on a monitor what has a native format of 16x9. Hence, the image is stretched. Even then, the level of detail itself really depends on the quality of the original image. Why do I say this ? Because I can grab my Nikon and take a 6MP (3264x2448) photo and then crop it to 800x600 without losing the 6MP detail within that cropped area. I can then stretch it to 1280/720 and it will still look sharp, just stretched out of proportion. IF you take a 1080P source and send it to a 720P display, YES, some small amount of detail will be lost. BUT, that's where screen size and distance from the screen do come into play. IF you are more than 3 feet away, you really won't notice the minimal loss of detail. Now, if you had a 65" 720P TV and were sitting 5 or 6 feet away, sure, you would notice a small difference in the level of detail when compared to a 1080P screen. But even then, that difference is pretty negligible and it comes down to the price difference and whether it is worth it to you. BTW, still $199 @ the J-Town store in Louisville. Haven't checked any others. Last edited by Demosthenes9; 02-23-2013 at 06:04 PM.. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |
