They're also $30 more, slower, and louder... On the other hand, the blacks will probably be a better choice if they ever get switched to 1 TB platters. These drives are both really reliable in normal usage anyway.

IMHO, it's all luck. Some people can get away with 1-year warranty (yes, I realize they changed this for non-OEM's) Seagates that are known for bad reliability (*cough* 7200.11 cough*) while other have there Blacks arrive dead. Most of these drives have high reliability rates, but some people have to get the few percent of bad drives out of the 100%. Shipping also plays a big role in DOA's. Your opinion is fair though. I chose a 3 TB Caviar Green over a 7200.14 just because of general reliability (that EZEX gave me a little remorse, but I only paid $80 AC). The green isn't the fastest, but I figure it will be fine since all I need is a drive for my games and media . My 256 GB Samsung 830 destroys every hard drive anyway. The EZEX has been getting great reviews though.

I used my $15 credit on Borderlands 2, instead of an external hard drive, I was planning to run games off of my external hard drive. Butt guess not, Borderlands 2 will last me a while!

All Steam copies of games work on any OS that is supported by the game. A retail PC copy of a Steamworks game can be played on Mac as long as the Steam account is the same.

Games won't run very well from an external hard drive. An external drive is too slow, you can store them there but don't run them from it.
