I'm really interested in this item, but I'm not sure about its condition.
Has anyone bought "Factory Refurbished" item here? Specially antenna? |

This antenna is great if you want to hide the antenna behind a picture that you've already hung on the wall. If aesthetics aren't an issue, just go to Best Buy and get an RCA rabbit ear antenna for less than $10. Or, if you're lucky, your local dollar store may have set-top antennas. I've tried several types of antennas, and they all work about the same, no matter what they look like. To get this best reception, you have to put an antenna on the roof. As far as this being "refurbished"... how do you refurbish something that has no moving parts? I would bet that people returned a lot of them because they weren't that happy they spent so much on something like this.

I think these are returns from Costco as the FL5000C was sold exclusively at Costco (http://www.winegard.com/flatwave/costco.php). I had bought this at Costco before, but returned it as it didn't work well for me. I went with a Mohu Leaf Plus (amplified version), which worked much better for me.

Build a big one!
http://www.instructables.com/id/B...tha/#step1 Build a small one! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWQhlmJTMzw I have built one like the small one .. this post is making me want to build the big one ... The little one actually works very well if you are in a big city. I have had bad luck with store bought antennas... the one I built is not replaceable. |

I have tried both the Mohu Leaf and this antenna. Here are my observations:
1) The Winegard one picked up about 30% more channels. Most likely, because it has a little bigger dimensions than the Mohu (this makes sense from the Physics perspective). 2) The Winegard has a better build quality. It does feel like it's made in the USA. The Mohu one feels cheaply made (probably China). 3) The Winegard has a longer cable, which can be very handy - e.g. in my case I was able to place it in a window where the Mohu cable would not reach. |

Before going out and buying an antenna, try inserting a paperclip into the coax port of your HDTV. If you live close enough to the transmitting stations, this may be sufficient to get you signal for all the channels any larger antenna would get you.
I've tried it in two televisions in my house and office - both work great! |
