If you're saying it can be installed in a desktop, not all external drives can. Western Digital has quite a few drives that has the USB controller mounted directly to the drive. There is no SATA interface on it, at all. So while yes, you can install it in the machine, you would still be limited to using it as a USB drive, not SATA. Here [mpecsinc.ca] is an example. |

These comes with 2 diff drives. DX0001 and DM0001. DX is 7200 and DM is 5900. At costco, I figured out the difference on external box but you are kinda taking chance if getting it online. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Thinking about using this as a dump for movies, photos, etc. Do this, or wait for a network drive to have the ability to stream?

Got this for $160 (I think) on Amazon last week.
Fantastic to just copy my entire 3tb drive onto this and then lock away the 3tb in a fireproof safe. $160 to backup my entire life's digital work is like getting a Corvette for $10. |

I'll go with Costco. I can buy it New Hampshire and save sales tax and it comes out the same price anyway. Plus, if anything goes wrong, I can bring it back to Costco instead of spending $10 on return shipping and getting a refurbished version in return.
