Ordered 3 of them. Ended up getting all 5900 RPM ST4000DM000 drives. This is actually what I wanted for a low-power, quiet, low-heat NAS. All boxes said Windows 8 ready.

Can anyone confirm if they put the ST4000DM000 in a synology and it was compatible? I recently received the two I ordered and prefer not to open the boxes as they most likely seem to have ST4000DM000 from what I see here so far. If the ST4000DM000 are compatible with synology then I'll surely keep them.

do the 5900 drives get extra warranty like the 7200 ones?

The 5900 drives so far don't get extra warranty. I can look them up separately on the seagate site, so I don't know if they must be coupled with the enclosure during RMA.

These drives have metal tape on them that is connected to the metal casing with the rubber feet once the enclosure is opened. I'm hoping that doesn't cause the RMA process to be rejected.

Every drive I received was 5900rpm, but that's preferred for my home storage anyways.

My drive is somewhat loud... the samsung 204UI 's 2tb's (3) and seagate 3tb backup plus (which is the standard 3000GB Barrucuda) moderately and noticeably more silent. Anyone else care to help?

Mine seems to be vibration prone. It also makes a little bit more noise than the 7200 rpm Barracuda 3tb.
It also consumes more power... Confirmed - with Kill A Watt Meter.
5-8 watts for the 3tb backup plus. And 15-20 watt for the 4tb 'new' and more "quiet" ST4000DM000 Backup Plus. Hmm, what gives.
The 4tb Newegg reviews claim 4tb is hot, but alas, didn't expect the 5900 rpm drive to be hotter along with more noisy and vibration prone than the other drives!


Anyone else notice their 5900Rpm drive is vibration prone compared to their other model drives?



And for whatever it's worth, to all B ^ + owners. Seagate offers warranty on open (external) drives, as long as you don't break anything.
Ask Seagate about a free 'backup warranty'. A generous and helpful Seagate CS rep offered me a free 'data backup warranty' provides warranty on open external hard drives.

I bought two - both are 5900rpm versions. Also going in a Synology.
