If that safe isn't rated for digital media (hard drives, optical discs, etc.) then your drive is not protected from fire as temperatures can reach several hundred degrees in a normal fireproof safe (that is rated for paperwork, not digital media). Temperatures that will melt solder sooner than paper will ignite.

Just keep that in mind!
I never considered this. THANK YOU.

Can I add this to a wireless router that can support external HD and make it an NAS?
You certainly can depending on your router. I tried using mine on an older Linksys 610N ver1 with DD-WRT but it would not recognize the entire capacity. You need a router that has GPT disk support.

Also, keep in mind that even if the hard drive works, the transfer speed is often limited since most routers are USB 2.0 and even under ideal circumstances transfer around 30 - 40 MB/s.

HOLY COW! I made my order yesterday at 12:10PM ET and just received my purchase. They got it to me in under 24 hours VIA FREE SHIPPING.

Can honestly say I've never had something like this happen before. Attached a screenshot with my order date. Definitely a bigger fan of buy.com now

That use to happen to me about 10 years ago. Buy.com warehouse was in Tennessee, and I was in St. Louis. It would freak me out in a good way.

I ordered 3 drives from the buy.com ebay deal and 3 from amazon with the last few weeks. You can find a better deal on a plain naked drive. Crack those bad boys open and dromp them in a Drobo!

Do you guys think it will work If I buy 2, yank the drives and put them in my new Synology DS212?
That's the plan. If the drives in them are ST4000DX000, those are on the Synology list [synology.com]. If they are the other type or something else, then we'll have to try and see if it is compatible.

Is there a way to tell the drive speed by plugging it into a laptop USB port? I'd prefer not to open every single one.

Thanks. I think the new TP-Link 3600 router I just got from the other thread will support this. Hopefully it's not a USB 2.0 although it wouldn't be a deal breaker if it isn't.

Second shot I got the Barracuda XT! Opened it up right in my car in the Costco parking lot. FWIW my 5400 had the windows 8 emblem on the box and my 7200 had the Windows 7 emblem.

Dude...you seem to be the only one that received it so far here. Did it have a win7 or win8 emblem? Seems that is a possible indicator of the drive inside.
