Note: Kindle FreeTime is available exclusively in the Apps library on Kindle Fire 2nd Generation and Kindle Fire HD. It is not available for Kindle Fire 1st Generation.
Freetime is $3 per month for prime members and is pretty handy for parents. I say skip this Gen 1 even with ability to root and ROM. I loved my nook with CM7 and kids still play with HP Touchpad running CM9....but I bet those that buy this will want better tablet in 6 months. I say save up $ and wait for Nook HD to root and ROM. Or just get new fire HD when onsale. FreeTime is great for some parents. Worth they extra $ Kindle FreeTime Unlimited is an optional monthly content subscription service that that offers a variety of children's books, videos, and apps for children ages 3-8 years old within Kindle FreeTime. When you sign up for Kindle FreeTime Unlimited, subscribed profiles receive thousands of hand-picked age-appropriate books, games, educational apps, movies and TV shows. Parents don't need to shop for or add the content to subscribed profiles — it appears automatically in the profile, ready for your child to enjoy. For more information, see www.amazon.com/kindlefreetimeunlimited. |

Why we have a few days to think this over let me pose this question to the SD community. This whole tablet arena is different then anything we have ever had in the past. This arena is personal. More like buying glasses (for your eyes) or a watch. Once you have it - you are stuck with it. So it really doesn't do any good to buy something and be stuck with it simply because you saved a few bucks. What I personally don't like about what is available today is that it is all about the price (I understand price but this type of product in a way shouldn't be price first). I personally wish they put out a 1k 'perfect' tablet. As good as tech can produce. Then I'd have a product that I could use for a few years and not constantly be looking for the next one. Look, I've personally purchased the IPAD 3, Nexus 7 and that is just in a period of less then 12 months. Why? Because none is satisfying. They all have their own pluses and minuses. No clear winner. I'd rather have a winner and not have to think about it for 2-3 years. What do you think about that? haha

At the $200 price point I'm more than happy to keep trying out new devices. If I don't like them I sell them on CL. Usually break even or lose maybe 20% of the price I paid. I look at things like this more like renting than buying. At $200 my wife, myself and my two kids can all have tablets. They don't need to use them 24/7 to justify the purchase. They do 90% of what I want and they are fine for what they are. I love my N7 and think it's absolutely terrific. There is nothing you could do on the Android front that would tempt me to buy a $1000 tablet. I will say that I am waiting for something like Surface Pro to drop into the $600-$700 range. Ultimately, my tablet future is Windows. I can put out to pasture most of our desktops/laptops and move to primarily tablets (especially true if I move to 100% console gaming). That's the future for me. Maybe I could be talked into a $1000 Windows device but it would have to be absolutely amazing and I don't see that on the horizon. |
