I have always been curious as to why crimes related to stealing of data/internet crimes often received harsher punishments when compared to very serious crimes like murders. Any internet/data-stealing crime should carry a lesser punishment than murder imo...

https://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/.../IV/50/1/b sexual assault of a child happens to be one of the harshest punishments in WI. the actual time a person serves is up to the judge, it is called judicial discretion. or up to the DA and the plea bargain they agree to, which is subject to judicial review. again, it is up to the state. plus this guy hasn't been sentenced yet. he could be charged with several counts for hacking into several companies. so a child rapist may get 5 years and the hacker may get 5 years for each count. i haven't seen a news story of a child rapist in WI get less than a year. i don't disagree that sometimes the punishments are out of whack. each case has its own merit and in the end up to the judge. |
