I was on a jury of a pedo last year and he was sentenced to 30 years. Seemed about right to me. Hell they could have executed him and I wouldn't have cared.

Laws and punishments are written at different times by different people with little thought as to comparing them all. Plus, in their attempt to be "tough on crime" pretty much no politician will ever vote to reduce a punishment or reword the criminal code to make something legal.

Just imagine you vote for a bill to change all forms of "hacking" to simple misdemeanors. Next election your opponent runs a clip . . .

each case has its own merit and is subject to judicial review. judge did what he felt was fair. maybe the judge is right, what does a prison sentance really serve? the prison system is just a cage for the most part. it doesn't help people once they are released. you also forget he can be taken to civil court too.

as a side note, mandatory minimums are BS. it is an over step of the legislative branch into the judicial branch.

i'm sure for every case you don;t think is "fair" there are 1000+ that are. can you find an example of a pedo getting less than 1 year in the last year? how many in the last 3?

Wow that must have been some pretty heavy stuff to sit through. I can't imagine having to be on a jury during a trial like that.

it isn't so much the bias that bothers me. he is just a ratings troll. if he doesn;t agree with his guest he treats them like trash and belittles them. it isn't news or journalism, it is entertainment. he uses anger and outrage the same way colbert and stewart use humor.

since it is just a graphic, i went to take a look at it. i'm at work, for some reason the page loads but not the images. judging by his legend, i'm going to go out on a limb he has no source for his data. i doubt he has reviewed the laws and pending legislation of all 50 states...

considering its readily available knowledge on the internet that 45 states have passed a form of jessica's law, i dunno how he's gonna have no source for his data lol....

Yeah the victim testimony was pretty uncomfortable. She's a teenager and all nervous and stuff... turning red and breathing hard while describing what this guy had been doing to her as long as she could remember.

To play devil's advocate, a hacker can damage/destroy the lives of thousands to millions of people (stealing identities, destroying companies, undermining governments) while a murderer/rapist only affects one person (at a time, at least).

I would argue that the damage done to a murder victim extends far beyond one life. Whole families are usually devastated, possibly for the rest for some of their lives. A hacker's crimes would normally not have as devastating effect on any particular person.

Well hackers generally do what they do just for enjoyment (viruses, etc.) or to steal money. Hackers don't necessarily cause a person to die. In the end, they may cause some people to lose money (identity theft) or cause companies/the government to lose money (piracy). I still think that crimes which involve a person or multiple people becoming deceased should be given some kind of penalty or sentence above any and all internet crimes. I'm not really all that much into politics but that's just my 2 cents on the whole thing. I find it really disturbing when I hear a story of some kid who pirated a movie or game getting 20+ years in prison when a murderer gets a slap on the wrist and maybe 5 years... It just doesn't seem right but I guess that's our legal system for ya
