Anyone use Visa Warranty Protection?

That Toshiba TV repairman is incompetent and is probably known to real electronics technicians as a "board swapper", that is, a person who can't repair circuit boards (common for TVs) but can merely swap them out. Any TV can be repaired, and repair is economical as long as the TV costs at least $200 and the problem isn't the video panel.
Also don't trust Toshiba tech support because the vast majority of their people know absolutely nothing about Toshiba products.

I hope you paid for the repair by credit card instead of check so you can get a full refund easily.

I thought Visa extended warranty was handled by a separate insurance company that accepts the financial risks of coverage, so Visa itself isn't at a loss for that $614 repair bill.

Thanks for your response. I have been paid by Visa's warranty company for the $614. I just don't know what to do. Do I keep trying to repair the tv or use what the toshiba guy said and submit that and get a new tv.

I didn't even know Visa had warranty protection...

dispute repair charge,you can buy new tv less than 650,if they did not fix it they should not charge,my guess is visa has paid all they will pay,how old was tv

Got the tv Dec. 2011. If tv cant be repaired or cost even more to repair, visa will either refund me 1400 or keep doing repairs.

Ive only had to fix a few TVs as I work 99.9% on computer systems, anyways youre a bit harsh on the repair guy, for all we know he could be trained to solely swap boards instead of trying to find and repair board issues. Being an ASP for multiple companies that have both tvs and computers, I can assure you all the (horrible) training materials from these companies do not go into detail and when you order under warranty parts, you cant order capacitors or other small parts, they want you to replace the entire board.

And the part about toshiba not knowing what they are doing- every company ive dealt with has piss poor support, even when you have access to ASP support, they are clueless.

But I do agree about it being BS that the tech said the TV cannot be repaired. Theres no reason it cant be repaired or replaced. I understand if the parts+labor exceed the cost of the purchase price, but the tech shouldve written a form stating that so the OP could use it for his visa claim.

It's one thing to replace whole boards because it's policy or because parts from other sources aren't allowed to be used, but when a tech says a TV is unrepairable, as opposed to unrepairable for the budget, that person is incompetent. The old rule was, if more than 2 hours of labor would be needed to repair a TV, the board would be swapped out.

If factory service manuals are so bad, why have I seen so many excellent ones at ElektroTanya? Even Funai (Sylvania, Philips, Magnavox) had really good manuals, as a former security flaw in their website demonstrated.

My comment about Toshiba phone support was based on multiple calls to them about 3 different TV models. Even their 3rd level tech support didn't even know about the <back arrow><exit><enter> sequence on the TV remote to make the service menu appear, nor were they able to bring it up when they tried it. I've also dealt with Toshiba computer tech support, and most of their people have access only to the same lousy Toshiba website the public has. One time, when I asked about a laptop part by its part number on the exploded diagram, the Toshiba person asked me to provide that diagram to him.

I just realized that a repair report saying my $1400 TV was unrepairable would be a godsend if it was my ticket to getting a refund, even if it came from an incompetent tech.

Some Toshiba models have almost opposite firmware update procedures than other models do, an example being the xxAV502U and xxAV502R.

I'm about to file a warranty claim with Visa for laptop hard drive failure.

How does it work? Do you get an estimate at Best Buy, then send the estimate paperwork to Visa, and they cut you a check?
Then you cash the check and get it fixed?

File your claim. Someone will call you to tell you to get an estimate on paper. Fax it to them for approval. They will call you once reviewed to give you the go ahead or not to repair. Keep all the paperwork.

I just got my check for $1400 for my tv.
