All storagereview.com says that the drive performed well in a single drive configuration - which they needed to do to benchmark the individual drives performance. They did not recommend it for single drive anywhere.

Read the link below for a little more information - at the end of the day the risk is relatively low of losing data just because of the TLER feature being different on this vs. regular consumer drive, but still exists. This link is specifically about the RE4 series of drives, but it is discussing the same feature (TLER) and pertains to the RED drive as well.

The Red series seems to be designed to operate in RAID arrays, multiple drives interconnected to act as one unit. Some older WD drives were notorious for dropping out of the array and weren't recommended for this usage scenario.

You could absolutely use it as a single drive, but what he was saying is you'd be missing out on one of the features that it was designed for, not to mention its spindle speed seems to be around 5,400rpm. In single drive usage, I would wager that the Seagate 3TB 7,200rpm drive will be faster in most regards.

I ordered 3 of these from newegg last time they were on sale with no issues - also did a 3 day burn-in and not a bad sector to be found.

In my case they shipped the 3 drives in one box that originally had 12(20?) Hitachi 3.5" harddrives in it, with the three drives in appropriately-sized cutouts in the foam drive carrier, extra cardboard around that and some air pillows to fill the rest of the space.

I can't imagine using 3tb drives in anything other than some kind of raid.

My concern with RAID was that I might not be able to recover the data if the NAS SATA controller died on me and, in any case, the continuous uptime that RAID provides was not critical in the home environment. Now that I have a second NAS that is used to back up the first one, I could switch from JBOD to RAID at my next hard drive upgrade.

If it's DOA, you can go straight to WD for a replacement, right?

Seriously guys, if its DOA send it to newegg and get a replacement. Thats a no brainer. you have 30 days, just chat with them. WD is going to give you a re-certified drive, screw that.
