Got this deal last time, and I had great difficulty connecting to my 5 GHz network. ASUS Support eventually got me straightened out with this advice:
The USB-N53 does not support DFS(dynamic frequency channels) channels, which may be why you sense it rarely, but not all the time. DFS channels for 5Ghz are 52-140.
My router was set to "auto" channel, and once I set it to channel 153, the USB-N53 worked. Which is weird, because my Netgear WNDA-3100 always detected it fine, and I read that it had similar DFS channel issues.
I've had really good success with these. 2.4ghz band was rendered useless in my area by other WAPs and switching over to 5ghz allowed me to regain my full speed. With the exception that the linux drivers suck.
