Absinthe without breaking the bank
I've been shopping around for traditional verte absinthe. Seems that anything of quality is around $70-$100/bottle. If any one knows of a good deal please let me know! Sent from the official Slickdeals App for iPhone & iPod Touch. |

Because they had to change the formula for the US, and because so few are allowed to be sold here, it's going to be a niche product. Your choices are either to pay up or to find a local micro-distillery that sells one that you like, like this found from a 10-second google search:
http://www.outsideonline.com/blog...inthe.html The other recommendations I'd make are: -Don't worry about it being verte or not. In my opinion, worry about the flavor, and let the color fall where it may. I bought some clear absinthe in Switzerland with my brother last time I was there, and we ended up at various parties with that bottle. It wasn't radioactive green, but the flavor was undeniable absinthe, as was the alcohol content. At these parties, after a glass and a half, despite the color, people knew they were drinking real absinthe. -Consider a similar beverage. Greek Ouzo and Middle Eastern Arak are both anise-flavored drinks, and Arak is also quite heavily alcoholic. It also turns milky when poured over water! Also, if by "traditional," you mean wormwood-infused (and therefore thujone-containing), don't worry about it. For the wormwood to have any kind of real effect on your brain, you have to drink Van Gogh-alcoholic level quantities of Absinthe; to get the hallucinogenic effects that he received, you'd have to mortgage your house, and that's if your liver doesn't fail first. And even then, it's largely a myth. It's the same thing as people claiming that "tequila shots make me crazy." Ethanol is ethanol, and unless you're claiming that the secondary chemicals in the alcohol is somehow neuroactive (for which I'd like to see some proof!), then the rest is just psychosomatic. |

And smoking marijuana is a whole can of worms. While I'm a proponent of legalization, and I am certainly aware of its benefits (if only the US were as willing as countries like Israel to heavily push marijuana reasearch), I'm not a proponent of current use. First, there's the legal aspect. It's not worth getting it on your record, going through the costs and time commitment to the legal system, etc. Second, as marijuana lasts much longer in your system, and there's no way to take a discrete blood level measurement like there is with alcohol, you have to be rather careful to ensure it's worn off, before you take risks like driving a car. Third, I am unwilling to go enjoy myself at the expense of others' lives. Americans' incessant drive for illicit substances is what has led to the crisis that's happening in Mexico, with 50,000 deaths over the last 6 years. Mexico has 9 of the top 20 most dangerous cities in the world right now: http://www.globalpost.com/photo-g...-the-world Which is ridiculous. For a country so close to us to be so dangerous to travel to is pathetic, and we should be ashamed. Although other illicit substances are at play as well, I wonder if every time someone decides to light up a joint, they consider the brutish methods that it took to get it into their hands, and the significant profits that the Mexican cartels and other criminals are making from the stuff.
