TLC memory is kinda a new thing in SSDs, previously something you find in cheap key chain memory sticks. It may be ok for many consumers, but I'd rather let others test drive it for a while before considering one for myself.
I don't think saving a little money over picking an SSD with MLC memory is worth it at this point, but I guess it depends on the consumer's usage scenario. Could be a good choice for data storage perhaps, if the drive doesn't get written to too much but is rather used for reading from (like an mp3/movie collection etc) then it should be just fine. That post may not convince you, but others may find it to be useful information. |

The TLC myth continues. I'm really tired of the ignorant people on here quoting many review sites as fact. Review sites have also stated these drives go into read-only mode when, in reality, they simply die. That's the most extensive test I've seen for SSDs on the web (if anyone can provide a better one, AWESOME! I welcome it!). TLC will not die in a year or 2 unless you are abusing the drives like these guys are. If you have that many writes/read (or close to it), skip even MLC & just buy an SLC drive. Buy what fits your needs & don't scare people that these drives die at the drop of a hat. They don't & there's no proof they do. Math calculations aren't realistic because they aren't based on data, but theory. We all know how that goes and I bet all of these people on here who claim these drives die quickly will eat their words. I've posted the same link as you & asked for proof that these drives die quickly (which no one has because there isn't any, besides quotes from forums who tested these drives for a week! ).Thanks for posting this too. |

I love how the TLC evangelists gloss over the higher power usage issue that "alarmist" HardOCP discussed, too.
In a desktop system, the power usage isn't an issue. In a laptop, it is.

As for the power consumption, I don't understand what the big fuss is. Yes, it would be nice to have minimal power consumption, but was it an issue when people were buying Samsung 830. Looking at the power consumption data from Anandtech, 840 non-pro has about the same active power consumption as the 830. http://www.anandtech.com/show/633...-review/12 http://www.overclock.net/t/126476...t_17389544 |
