SSD will only affect the speed of things that are actually on the drive; it's very common for users to install their boot (along with other things that are frequently accessed or have abnormal load times) and then dump everything else on a traditional hard drive. What, exactly, you need to put onto an SSD is what will determine the size of the drive you look into.

This isn't the 840 Pro drive. I'm glad I jumped on the Crucial M4 256 GB deal for the same price.

How much faster can one expect the speedier (and more expensive at around $230) Pro version of this drive to make one's system in real-world situations, if one puts one's OS, apps and one's most frequently accessed data on the SSD?

I realize that this depends a lot on what one uses one's system for, so let's say that one doesn't do much if any gaming, or any specialized data crunching such as video or photo processing, but mainly uses it for Office apps, browsing, HTPC, light programming and db development, etc? Is the extra $80 or so to get the Pro version mostly wasted?

I'm inclined to agree as I don't see much real use for that extra 250GB for most people these days. Most people can probably easily fit their OS, apps and most frequently accessed data on a 250GB SSD, with the rest of their data either not really needing or benefiting much from SSD speeds, or being way too big to fit on the fairly puny extra 250GB that a 500GB drive could offer. So I'm not sure what it would really be useful for, for most people at least (certainly there are some who do need that extra 250GB).

In my case, I can fit my OS, apps and frequently-accessed data on a 250GB SSD, with plenty of spare room left over for growth and redundancy, with the rest of my multi-TB data (almost entirely video) neither needing the speed of an SSD, nor being able to fit on one.
