I think that the movie has lost a lot of context over the years. It started off as an award-winning play in London. It was a parody of the hokey B-movie horror and sci-fi movies of the 50's. There are all sorts of references, like Magenta's Bride of Frankenstein hair at the end.

In the 70's and 80's especially, Rocky was more of an event for a lot of kids who felt outside of the mainstream. I know that back in the late 80's, Rocky was the first place I went with a mixed crowd (i.e. not a gay bar) that I felt being comfortable being openly gay. it was also the first chance for a lot of kids to publicly say lots of dirty things and yell them out at the top of our lungs. (It was a different time then.)

But if you've never seen the show in a theater with a crowd yelling out lines and a group of volunteers acting it out in front of the screen, than you haven't really had the full experience. The hysterical creative lines that people came up with were a huge part of the experience. Learning when to say what was part of being in with the crowd. And coming up with lines that ended up becoming ones that everyone yelled helped keep the crowd involved.

I was in the cast, playing Brad and the Narrator in Cambridge, MA. It's the oily time I've ever really acted in any way publicly. But those were really fun times.

Unfortunately, most theaters don't allow throwing things any more, because people ruined it. One person here jokes about putting hand lotion in his squirt gun. But some people got lazy and used cleaners from the store, instead of water. Imagine getting squirted in the face with ammonia, while you're trying to perform! And the thrown food (you're a HOT DOG, but you'd better not try to hurt her, FRANK FURTER) became a problem because they attracted roaches and rats. Some theaters had damage done to their screens from things being thrown at them too hard.

Still, if you can see it live, I'd strongly recommend it. And the Blu-Ray should bring back a lot of memories.

Does anyone know if there is an alternate soundtrack of the audience participation version? If so, that's a good way to somewhat relive the live experience, even if the jokes are 20+ years old.
