Just for informations sake I'll share the three programs I always keep on my flash drive. All are freeware or shareware. I'll put a link next to each one of its respective PCWorld write up.
The 1st one is called HD Tune ( http://www.pcworld.com/article/232206/hd_tune.html ) and its just a simple way to check the Drives health and its S.M.A.R.T status and to gauge performance and scan for errors. The 2nd is Easeus Partition Manager Home and it is as its title suggests-lets you manage a drive and its partitions from the most simple format single partition to more "involved" operations like resizing existing partitions or merging, all things you can do from the command line but it gives you a GUI to make it accessible to everyone. It's a program that runs on Windows. http://www.pcworld.com/article/231472/easeus_partition_master_home_edition.html The last one is very similar to the second one in its function with one huge distinction, you run it as a LiveCD or put it on a flash drive even and it gives you a small Linux based environment that the program- GParted Live- lets you format, partition, merge or do whatever you need to windows Mac or Linux formatted discs and is great for when you have a corrupt Windows Install or any situation in which you are having trouble either booting to the drive you are trying to work on a drive that for whatever reason windows isn't letting you manage properly. I've had drives that wouldn't even show up in my windows 7 install session or kept failing during format and this has let me simply, without having to remove the drive, make whatever repairs are needed or in my most recent case at least see that It's S.M.A.R.T status is being reported as a failing drive so I can move on, but for some reason it wouldn't report the drives health in Windows PE environment. Extremely YMMV
I realize I'm lucky that my local Office Depot apparently doesn't care what the fine print on their coupons says...Walked in with three 30% coupons tonight. Walked out with 3 x 3TB drives at $84/ea + tax, or 9TB total for $252 + tax - that's $28/TB! Even with tax they were still just under $90 a pop - an extra drive for just $50 more than the Newegg price for two. I certainly can't complain! Manager had to override the computer since they were on sale, but did it no questions asked. Even rang them up together. I actually offered to just buy one (because I was in there last night - and used a 30% coupon - to buy something else) but they said "no, you can buy three!"

On a related note, I've run a complete scan on 2 of the 3 so far with the Hitachi DFT (Drive Fitness Test) tool [hgst.com] and they've checked out perfectly. |

If you didn't get the Ebay deal on the Seagate a week or two ago you missed out (same price). I wouldn't trust Toshiba and plus that 'Buy' retailer fedexes their orders so I got it faster than amazon would ever get it there. Newegg shipping is a joke.
I guess that's how they have such good deals, they use 5th rate shipping. But you take your chances always. Yours might be fine. I have a hitachi going strong for years that everyone said was faulty. It was probably just their case. Last edited by slugbom; 03-03-2013 at 03:59 PM.. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

Horrible situation. It worked for a few days on windows 7, then started clikcing & beeping. After a reboot, the drive wasn't recognized as a disk, only as a device. I also tried it on 2 other computers: In Windows xp, same thing as windows 7. On ubuntu, the device kept cycling and disconnecting and would not mount. Tried plugging into both usb 2 and 3 ports, no luck. seems like a hardware issue related to the enclusure/connection because disk utilities reveal that the underlying disk is OK - passes all the usual tests.
It's a disaster because I have a lot of important data stored there. The drive died just as I was about to backup everything on the cloud, so I can't acces the data right now. Calling tech cupport to see if they'll repair it since it's still under warranty. It's inexcusable that there's no support for this product on the toshiba site! Lesson learned - do research first and don't be tempted by a great deal, it's not always what it seems. Go with Seagate or LaCie, those are solid! |
