I don't think I've seen a 3.0 drive cheaper than this. This is fine for storing anything you got. $65 is $4 bucks cheaper than what I got mine at.

FWIW, 2.0 drives are being phased out, so your wait might turn into an eternity.
There's cheaper drives in terms of GB/$, but that would be more than $65 of course.

the 3.0 vs 2.0 is the transfer rate. and yes 3.0 is much much faster if you are transferring large amounts of data.

USB 3.0 speeds are significantly faster than USB 2.0 but you will need a USB 3.0 port on your computer to utilize the increased speeds. If you only have USB 2.0 ports then you will still be able to use the drive, just not enjoy the increased speeds.

Not really in the portable arena, I've also been looking for that but the future-proofing is worth whatever marginal extra cost is incurred.

Yea, just passed on the 3TB drive, this one does the trick. I'd rather have 2 1TB portable drives for redundancy than 1 larger 3TB drive.

Word of advice: unless you need an external HD right now, the longer you wait, the cheaper they will be. There's no reason to stock up, unless you think there's a high chance for another flood in Thailand.

does this have external power or does it get its power via USB? also would anyone know if these drives power down when not in use or do they consistently spin? Thank you in advance.

Good price for a portable.

For those wondering, this is a 2.5" drive that is powered through USB which makes it small and portable (no external power supply). There won't be any cheaper USB 2.0 because everyone is phasing USB 2.0 out. If you want something for throwing in a bag and taking with, this is a good deal. If you just want an external drive you are going to have connected to your PC and never plan on taking it with you, I would get a 3.5" external for cheaper.
